Agra: Taj Mahal Tour with Professional Photoshoot

Somebody else holds the camera

This is a photoshoot with a guide attached rather than a tour with photos attached. A professional photographer works the site with you while a licensed guide handles the history, and you come away with an edited set rather than forty near-identical phone pictures of a white building.

Before you start

Pickup from your hotel, railway station or wherever you are staying in Agra, and a briefing: what the light is doing, which frames are possible at that hour, and what you would like out of it.

If you have references in mind, bring them. It is one photographer and you.

The frames

The Diana bench on the central axis, which everyone queues for and which is worth the queue. The reflection in the long water channel. Silhouettes against the sun. The forced-perspective shots — holding, pinching, balancing the dome — which are more fun to do than to read about. And the framed shots through the red sandstone arches of the Darwaza-i-Rauza gateway, where warm stone sets off the marble.

The guide's half

Shah Jahan began the Taj in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty thousand workers, twenty-two years, marble hauled 300 km from Makrana.

The details you would otherwise walk past: the calligraphy cut in progressively larger letters so it reads the same height from the ground; the pietra dura inlay, up to sixty stones in one flower; the four minarets, tilted fractionally outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb; and the single asymmetry in an otherwise perfectly mirrored building — Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off-axis by Aurangzeb.

Practical

Closed Fridays. Sunrise gives the best light and the smallest crowd.

No tripods, no drones — security is absolute, so everything is shot handheld.

Wear a colour: red, yellow and deep blue read far better against white marble than white or beige.
