Mehndi is not a tourist activity in India, it is a household craft tied to weddings, festivals and Eid, and the artists who do it well have been doing it since childhood. This is an hour with one of them in Agra.
What happens
You choose a style and a placement, hands or feet, simple or dense. The artist works freehand from a cone, which is why the good ones are worth seeking out: there is no stencil and no correcting. Arabic designs are bolder and more open, Indian designs finer and more filled-in, and Rajasthani work sits somewhere between. Your artist will show you options and talk you through what suits the space.
The paste takes about twenty minutes to apply for a hand and then needs a couple of hours to dry and set. The stain deepens over the next day or two, so it looks better on day two than on the day itself.

Worth knowing
The paste is natural henna, which stains orange-brown and deepens to a dark reddish brown. Black henna containing PPD causes chemical burns and scarring; it is not used here and you should refuse it anywhere it is offered.
The design lasts roughly one to two weeks and fades gradually. It cannot be removed early.
Keep the paste on as long as you can bear, ideally two to six hours. Do not wash it off; scrape it when dry.
Avoid water on the area for the first twelve hours or the colour will not develop fully.
Book this after your Taj visit, not before. Damp henna and a monument full of white marble do not go together.
