The case for the train is time and predictability. The superfast service covers Delhi to Agra in a fraction of the road journey, and it leaves when it leaves regardless of what the expressway is doing. You arrive rested rather than having spent three hours in traffic.
This is the version where train tickets, car, driver and guide are all bundled, so there is nothing to arrange at either end.
How the day runs
Pickup from your hotel or the airport, then the morning train from Delhi. At Agra a private air-conditioned car and your government-approved guide are waiting. From there the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, with the car staying with you throughout so bags and jackets are never a problem. Late afternoon back to the station for the return service, and a car meets you in Delhi to take you home. About eight hours.
Options
Three versions: from Agra with just car and guide if you are making your own way, second-class train tickets with car and guide, or first-class train tickets with the same. The difference between the train classes is seat comfort and catering, not journey time.

The Taj is closed on Fridays.
