Why the licence matters in Agra

Every gate in this city is worked by men offering to guide you. Most are unlicensed, some are very good, and a fair number will tell you the emperor cut off his craftsmen's hands — a story with no basis in any Mughal record, which first appears in the nineteenth century.

A government-approved guide has passed the Ministry of Tourism's examination on history, architecture and regulation, carries a photo licence, and can be reported if they mislead you. That is the whole value of this booking.

Foreign languages

This is the other reason to book rather than hire at the gate. Licensed guides are certified in specific languages — French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and others are all available in Agra — and at the gate you will only find English and Hindi.

The walk

You meet your guide at the time and place you choose.

Taj Mahal first. Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, marble hauled 400 km from Makrana in Rajasthan.

The calligraphy cut in progressively larger letters so it reads uniformly from the ground — the calligrapher Amanat Khan is the only craftsman who signed his work anywhere on the building. The pietra dura inlay, up to sixty stones in one flower. The four minarets, tilted outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb. And the single break in the symmetry: Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, added off-axis by Aurangzeb.

Agra Fort afterwards, and the Musamman Burj where that imprisonment happened, with the Taj in view along the river.
