It is 1,700 km each way, which is why this runs on flights rather than trains. You leave Chennai early, fly to Delhi, drive to Agra, see the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort with a guide, and fly home that night. About eighteen hours door to door, and you sleep in your own bed.
For anyone based in south India with a single day to spare, this is the only version of the Taj trip that does not cost a hotel night and two days of leave.
How the day runs
Pickup from your address in Chennai for the morning flight. A private air-conditioned car meets you at Delhi and runs down the Yamuna Expressway to Agra, roughly three hours. Your English-speaking guide takes you through the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, covering the inlay work, the symmetry, and the story of Shah Jahan's imprisonment within sight of the tomb he built. Then back to Delhi for the evening flight, and a car home from Chennai airport.
