Fast-Track Entry Into Taj Mahal with Entrance Included. in Agra

The tickets are bought before you arrive

Your guide meets you holding them, and you go through express entry rather than the counter. In season that is the difference between three hours at the Taj and four and a half, most of the extra spent standing still.

Security applies to everyone regardless: no tripods, no drones, no food, no large bags, no lighters. Lockers at the gate.

The octagonal chamber

Inside the mausoleum the plan is an eight-sided hall, and that is deliberate — Mughal funerary architecture used the octagon to sit between the square of the earth and the circle of the heavens. The same shape appears in the Musamman Burj at Agra Fort, and in Humayun's Tomb before both.

Around the cenotaphs is a screen of carved marble jali, cut from a single block, replacing an earlier one in gold that Shah Jahan had made and Aurangzeb removed.

The cenotaphs themselves are empty. The real graves are in the crypt directly below, sealed, aligned exactly beneath, and closed to visitors — a Mughal convention, because the actual burial is not meant to be a spectacle.

Mumtaz Mahal's inscription runs around her cenotaph with her titles and the date of her death in 1631. Shah Jahan's, added thirty-five years later, is larger and sits off the central axis — the only asymmetry in a building otherwise mirrored to the millimetre.

The calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads uniformly from the ground. The pietra dura, up to sixty pieces of stone in a single flower. The four minarets, tilted fractionally outward so an earthquake would drop them away from the tomb.
