From Agra: Day Trip to Chambal River Safari with Lunch

One of the cleanest rivers in India, 80 km from the Taj

The Chambal has a strange history: for centuries the ravines along it were bandit country, which meant nobody built factories or towns on its banks. The result is that while the Yamuna at Agra is among India's most polluted rivers, the Chambal an hour away is among its cleanest, and it holds wildlife that has disappeared almost everywhere else.

The safari

A two to three hour boat run with an English-speaking naturalist, on a flat-bottomed boat that goes slowly and quietly.

Gharial are the reason most people come — the fish-eating crocodilian with the long narrow snout and the bulb on the end. There are somewhere around 650 breeding adults left in the wild and roughly three-quarters of them live in this sanctuary. You will see them hauled out on the sandbanks in numbers.

Mugger crocodiles share the water and are the more dangerous of the two, though not to a boat.

Gangetic river dolphins are here as well — blind, freshwater, echolocating, and India's national aquatic animal. Sightings are real but not guaranteed; they surface briefly and you need patience.

Birds are the underrated half of the trip: Indian skimmers cutting the surface with the lower half of their beak, bar-headed geese in winter, sarus cranes, black-bellied terns, and the red-crowned roof turtle basking on every log.

Practical

About seven hours door to door with an 80 km drive each way in a private air-conditioned car. Lunch is included.

The season matters. November to March is the window — the water is low and clear, the sandbanks are exposed, and the migratory birds are in. The monsoon months are poor and can be unrunnable.

Bring binoculars if you own a pair, a hat, and sunscreen; there is no shade on the water.
