The Mughal sites everyone drives past.
This is the Agra day for people who have already done the Taj, or who are not that interested in it. Two sites, both remarkable, both quiet.
Fatehpur Sikri is Akbar's capital, built from red sandstone in the 1570s and abandoned inside fifteen years, most probably because the water ran out. What survives is an entire imperial city with almost nobody in it: the Buland Darwaza, at 54 metres the tallest gateway in India, built to mark a victory in Gujarat; the Panch Mahal, five open storeys stepping back like a wedding cake; the Diwan-i-Khas with its single carved central pillar; and the white marble dargah of Salim Chishti, where women still tie threads to the lattice screens for a wish.
Sikandra holds Akbar's own tomb, set in a walled deer park on the road north out of Agra. He began it himself and his son Jahangir finished it, and the mix of sandstone and marble, Hindu and Islamic and Christian motifs, is the clearest statement in stone of what Akbar was trying to build. Blackbuck and langurs live in the gardens. Most tourists never come.
