A whole Mughal capital, and hardly anyone in it.

Akbar built Fatehpur Sikri from 1571 in red sandstone, moved his court there, and abandoned it within about fifteen years. The usual explanation is that the water supply failed. Because nothing was ever built over it, what stands today is a complete imperial city rather than a ruin, and it is markedly quieter than anything in Agra itself.

What you see

The Buland Darwaza, 54 metres high, raised to mark Akbar's Gujarat campaign and still the tallest gateway in India. You climb a long flight of steps to it and the scale does not really land until you are underneath.

The dargah of Salim Chishti, white marble in a sandstone courtyard, where the Sufi saint who foretold Akbar's son is buried. Women still tie threads through the pierced marble screens and make a wish, and they still come, so this is a living shrine rather than an exhibit.

The Panch Mahal, five open storeys stepping back as they rise, each supported on columns of which no two are carved alike. The Diwan-i-Khas, with a single central pillar carrying a circular platform reached by four bridges, where Akbar is said to have sat while his advisers argued from the corners. And Jodha Bai's Palace, where the Hindu and Islamic design working side by side was deliberate policy rather than accident.
