An entire imperial city, largely to yourself.
Akbar built Fatehpur Sikri in the 1570s as his new capital, in red sandstone, at enormous expense. He abandoned it within about fifteen years, most likely because the water supply failed. What is left is a complete Mughal city, unusually intact because nobody ever built over it, and remarkably quiet compared with anything in Agra itself.
What you see
The Buland Darwaza is the entrance, 54 metres high, built to mark Akbar's Gujarat campaign and still the tallest gateway in India. Inside sits the marble dargah of Salim Chishti, the Sufi saint who predicted Akbar's son, where women still tie threads to the pierced screens and make a wish. The Panch Mahal steps back through five open storeys like a stack of pavilions. The Diwan-i-Khas has a single carved central pillar with a platform on top, where Akbar is said to have sat while advisers debated from the corners, and the Jodha Bai Palace shows the Hindu and Islamic design working together that defined his court.
