Where Indian perfume actually comes from.
Kannauj has been distilling fragrance for well over a thousand years, and it still does it the old way. Copper vessels called degs sit over wood fires, flowers go in with water, and the vapour runs through bamboo pipes into receivers of sandalwood oil. No alcohol, no synthetics. The result is attar, and the technique, deg-bhapka, has barely changed since the Mughals were buying it.
The town is about three hours from Agra and almost no tourists go. What makes the visit worth the drive is that you see the whole chain in one afternoon: the flower market where jasmine and rose arrive by the sackful before dawn, the distillery floor with the fires lit, and the ageing room where oils sit in leather bottles for months.

Worth knowing
This is a long day on Indian roads. Twelve hours, most of it driving, for perhaps three hours in Kannauj. Worth it if the subject genuinely interests you; not if you are looking for a light half-day.
The distillery is a working business, not a demonstration set up for visitors. What is running depends on the season and what flowers are in.
Mitti attar, distilled from baked earth after the first monsoon rain, is the one Kannauj is most famous for. It smells exactly like rain on dry ground.
Buying is entirely optional and there is no pressure. Genuine attar is expensive for a reason.
The best months are roughly March to July, when rose and jasmine are in season and the degs are busiest.
