The route
Hotel or airport pickup within Agra in a private air-conditioned car. Taj Mahal first, early if you will take the advice, with skip-the-line entry and a government-approved guide who covers the pietra dura inlay, the calligraphy and the construction history.
Then Agra Fort. It is the one people assume is a lesser version of the Taj and it is not; it is a working red sandstone fortress with marble palaces inside it, and the Musamman Burj, the octagonal tower where Shah Jahan spent his final eight years imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb, looks straight across the Yamuna at the tomb he built for his wife. Standing there is what makes the Taj land properly.
