Two jobs, two people

A guide tells you why the building looks the way it does. A photographer knows that the famous bench is in shadow until twenty past seven and that the best frame on the west side is through the mosque's second arch. Sunrise, specifically

The Taj opens half an hour before sunrise, and that first hour is the whole reason to get up in the dark: the marble moves from grey to pink to white, mist sits on the Yamuna behind the dome in winter, and the crowd is perhaps a fifth of what it will be by mid-morning.

Fast-track entry puts you in the shorter queue. Security applies to everyone regardless — no tripods, no drones, no food, no large bags.

What gets shot

The Diana bench with the dome centred and an empty axis behind you. The reflection in the water channel. Silhouettes against the rising sun. The forced-perspective shots. Framing through the arches of the great gateway.

What the guide adds

The calligraphy sized larger as it rises so that it reads evenly from the ground. The pietra dura inlay where one flower can hold sixty separate stones. The minarets leaning outward so an earthquake would take them clear of the tomb. The optical trick at the gateway, where the Taj appears to shrink as you approach it. And the one deliberate break in the symmetry — Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off-centre by Aurangzeb.
