Full description

India's first elephant hospital, and a real rescue centre

Wildlife SOS runs the Elephant Conservation and Care Centre at Churmura, about an hour from Agra, and it is the genuine article rather than a sanctuary in name.

The elephants here came out of the begging trade, from circuses, from wedding and temple work, and from the tourist ride lines. Many arrived blind, with shattered feet, with abscesses from the ankush, or malnourished. Some had spent decades in chains.

The organisation also runs the country's first elephant hospital on the site, with a hydrotherapy pool, a digital X-ray and a quarantine wing.

What a visit is

Not a petting session. There is no riding, no bathing with the elephants, and no feeding by hand — the animals are recovering and the care protocol comes first.

What you get instead is observation from a distance with a keeper explaining each animal's history: what it was used for, what was wrong with it when it arrived, and what its recovery has looked like. Several of the elephants here are individually well known in India.

You will also see how much work it takes — the food preparation, the foot care, the sheer scale of the enclosures.

It is quieter and more sobering than the interactive experiences, and most people find it more affecting.

Why it matters

Elephant rides at Amber Fort and Agra's monuments still operate. Seeing what those animals' feet and spines look like after twenty years of it is the most persuasive argument against booking one, and it is why we do not sell them.
