Jaipur to the Taj for sunrise

Jaipur to Agra is 240 km, four to five hours through Bharatpur. To be at the gates when they open you leave in the middle of the night, which sounds unreasonable and is the only way to get the sunrise without changing hotels.

Sunrise at the Taj

The gates open half an hour before the sun. The marble reads grey, then pink, then a cold white as the light comes over the far bank of the Yamuna; in December and January there is mist on the river behind the dome, and the crowd is a fifth of what it becomes by mid-morning.

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty thousand workers, twenty-two years, and marble hauled 300 km from Makrana — the same Rajasthani quarries that supplied half the marble you will have seen in Jaipur.

Your guide covers the calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads uniformly from the ground, the pietra dura inlay of up to sixty stones per flower, the four minarets leaning outward so an earthquake would take them clear of the tomb, and the one asymmetry in the whole building — Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off-axis by Aurangzeb.

Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565 with his grandson's marble palaces inside: the Diwan-i-Am, the Sheesh Mahal, and the Musamman Burj, the tower where that grandson spent his last eight years as a prisoner, looking downriver at the tomb he had built.

The Taj is closed on Fridays. Entry is ₹1,300 a head for a foreign adult with the mausoleum, ₹650 at the fort, unless your option covers them.
