Taj Mahal
Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, and marble hauled from Makrana — which is in Rajasthan, about three hours from where this tour starts. The Taj is, in material terms, a Rajasthani building assembled in Uttar Pradesh.

Itimad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj
The building most day trips skip and the one that made the Taj possible. Nur Jahan built it for her father between 1622 and 1628 — the first entirely marble Mughal building and the first in India to use pietra dura. Smaller, more finely inlaid, and almost always empty.
