Sunrise in Agra, starting from Jaipur

Jaipur to Agra is 240 km, four to five hours through Bharatpur. To be at the Taj for the gates you leave Jaipur in the middle of the night, which sounds unreasonable and is the only way to get the sunrise without moving hotels.

The Taj at first light

Gates open half an hour before sunrise. The marble goes grey, then pink, then white as the sun clears the Yamuna; in winter there is mist on the river behind the dome.

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty thousand workers, twenty-two years, marble hauled 300 km from Makrana — the same Rajasthani quarries that supplied half of Jaipur.

Your guide will show you the calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads uniformly from the ground, the pietra dura inlay of up to sixty stones per flower, the four minarets leaning outward so an earthquake would take them clear of the tomb, and the one asymmetry in the whole building — Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off-axis beside his wife's by Aurangzeb.

Agra Fort

Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565, rebuilt inside in marble by Shah Jahan. The Diwan-i-Am, the Sheesh Mahal, and the Musamman Burj — the octagonal tower where Aurangzeb held his father prisoner for eight years, the Taj visible down the river.

Itimad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj

Across the Yamuna: Nur Jahan's tomb for her father, 1622–28, the first all-marble Mughal building and the first use of pietra dura in India. It predates the Taj by a decade and made it possible.
