Mumbai to the Taj and back between two nights

Mumbai to Delhi is 1,150 km. By air it is two hours, which is the only way this works as a day: early flight north, car to Agra, the monuments, and the evening flight home.

It is a very long day. People do it, and the alternative is two travel days out of a short trip.

The drive

From Delhi airport down the Yamuna Expressway to Agra, about three and a half hours in a private car, with a break.

Taj Mahal

Your guide meets you in Agra.

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty thousand workers and twenty-two years; the marble came 400 km from Makrana in Rajasthan by ox cart.

What a guide gives you is the making of it: the calligraphy cut in progressively larger letters so that from the ground every line appears the same height; the pietra dura inlay, where a single flower can hold sixty separate pieces of cornelian, jasper and lapis; the four minarets, tilted fractionally outward so that an earthquake would drop them away from the tomb; and the illusion at the gateway, where the building appears to shrink as you walk toward it.

And the one asymmetry in a composition mirrored to the millimetre: Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off the central axis by his son after his death.

Agra Fort

Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside: the Diwan-i-Am, the Khas Mahal, the Sheesh Mahal. And the Musamman Burj, the tower where Aurangzeb imprisoned him for the last eight years of his life, the Taj visible along the water.
