Why the marble changes colour

It is not a lighting effect. Makrana marble is translucent to about a centimetre, so light enters the surface, scatters inside it, and comes back out — which means the stone takes on the colour of whatever is hitting it rather than just reflecting it.

At sunset that means gold, then rose, then a grey that holds longer than the sky does. Mughal writers described the building as changing with the hours, and they were reporting an optical property rather than writing poetry.

Sunset is the hour to see it, and it is also the easier visit: no four o'clock alarm, and a crowd that thins toward closing instead of building.

Pickup from your hotel lobby in Agra in the afternoon. Tickets are pre-purchased, so you go to the entry lane and not the counter.

Your guide is approved by the Ministry of Tourism, which matters in Agra — the gates are worked by unlicensed guides and the difference in what you learn is considerable.

Inside

Through the Darwaza-i-Rauza gateway, where the Taj appears in the arch and, by deliberate proportion, appears to shrink as you walk toward it.

Then the charbagh garden divided by water channels, with the tomb reflecting down the length of the central pool.

At the plinth: the calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads evenly from below; the pietra dura inlay of cornelian, jasper, lapis and jade; the four minarets, tilted outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb.

And the single asymmetry in a perfectly mirrored building: Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off the central axis by Aurangzeb after his death. The real graves are sealed in the crypt below.
