Overnight Agra/Taj Mahal Tour with Fatehpur Sikri and Hotel

Three UNESCO sites, without the sprint

Doing the Taj, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri in a single day from Delhi is possible and it is miserable. Spread across two days with a night in Agra, it becomes an actual trip: the Taj gets its sunrise, Fatehpur Sikri gets the morning it needs, and nobody spends fourteen hours in a car.

Day one

Drive down the Yamuna Expressway from Delhi, roughly three and a half hours. Agra Fort in the afternoon — Akbar's red sandstone stronghold of 1565, with the marble palaces Shah Jahan added, and the Musamman Burj where Aurangzeb imprisoned him for eight years with the Taj in view down the river.

Day two, sunrise

The Taj Mahal as the gates open, half an hour before sunrise. Grey, then pink, then white, and mist on the Yamuna in winter. Your guide will show you the calligraphy sized to read evenly from the ground, the pietra dura inlay, the minarets tilted outward to fall clear of the tomb, and the single asymmetry of Shah Jahan's own cenotaph.

Fatehpur Sikri

Then west, 40 km, to the capital Akbar built in 1571 and abandoned fourteen years later when the water ran out.

It is the most complete Mughal city anywhere, because nobody lived in it long enough to change it: the Buland Darwaza, a 54-metre victory gate; the Panch Mahal, five open storeys stepping back like a wedding cake; the Diwan-i-Khas with its single carved central pillar; and the marble dargah of Salim Chishti, the Sufi saint whose blessing Akbar credited for the son he had waited for.

Back to Delhi in the evening.
