Three Mughal monuments, none of them the famous one.

This is the Agra day for people who have already done the Taj, or who are in Agra on a Friday when it is closed. All three sites are open every day.

Agra Fort

Akbar built it in red sandstone from 1565; Shah Jahan rebuilt much of the interior in marble. You see the Amar Singh Gate, angled and sloped specifically to stop war elephants building momentum. The Diwan-i-Am, where the emperor heard petitions from anyone who came. The Jahangir Palace, and the Musamman Burj, where Shah Jahan was held by his son with the Taj visible across the river.

Itimad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj

Nur Jahan built it for her father in the 1620s. The first Mughal building faced entirely in white marble, and the first to use pietra dura inlay at scale — the techniques the Taj later made famous, at a size where you can actually examine them. Usually almost empty.

Sikandra

Akbar's own tomb, in a walled deer park on the north road. He began it and his son Jahangir finished it, and the mix of sandstone and marble with Hindu, Islamic and Christian motifs is the clearest statement in stone of what Akbar was trying to build. Blackbuck and langurs live in the gardens. Very few tourists come.

Only about a quarter of Agra Fort is open to the public; the rest is still an army cantonment.
Sikandra is 10 km north, the Baby Taj is across the river — so there is real driving between the three.
