Why the overnight version is better

The Delhi-to-Agra day trip is a fourteen-hour tunnel with a monument in the middle of it. Staying a night changes the whole shape: you see the Taj in the evening light and again at sunrise, you sleep in Agra instead of a car, and Agra Fort gets the two hours it deserves rather than forty minutes.

Evening: the Taj at sunset

The marble in the last hour goes warm gold, then rose. Fewer people, no queue by that point in the day, and you can stand at the far end of the water channel without being asked to move on.

Akbar's red sandstone fort of 1565, rebuilt in marble by Shah Jahan: the Diwan-i-Am, the Khas Mahal, the Sheesh Mahal, and the Musamman Burj, the octagonal tower where Aurangzeb held his father prisoner for eight years with a view straight down the river to the tomb he had built.

Morning: the Taj at sunrise

The second visit is the one people remember. The gates open half an hour before sunrise; the marble reads grey, then pink, then white, and in winter mist lies on the Yamuna behind the dome.

Seeing the same building at both ends of the day is a genuinely different experience from seeing it once.
