Detailed Itinerary

Early Morning Pickup and Scenic Drive

Your unforgettable day begins with an early morning pickup at 6:00 AM from your hotel anywhere in Delhi or the National Capital Region. You'll be greeted by your friendly local guide and chauffeured comfortably in an air-conditioned sedan. As you set off on the 3.5-hour journey via the Yamuna Expressway, you'll watch the cityscape slowly give way to the tranquil, picturesque countryside. This drive is not just a transfer—it’s your introduction to the heartland of northern India, where fertile fields and traditional villages paint a serene backdrop for what lies ahead. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing and shoes, as you’ll be walking quite a bit, and carry sunscreen to protect yourself from the morning sun.

Sunrise Visit to the Taj Mahal

Arriving at the Taj Mahal just as the sun begins to rise is a truly magical experience. You'll enjoy skip-the-line entry, allowing you to avoid the usual crowds and soak in the monument’s breathtaking beauty in peaceful solitude. Your guide will take you through the history of this iconic mausoleum, built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. As the soft morning light illuminates the gleaming white marble, you’ll learn about the intricate craftsmanship, delicate inlay work, and the symbolism woven into every detail of the Taj. This is more than a visit; it’s an emotional journey into one of the world’s greatest love stories and architectural wonders.

Exploring Agra Fort: A Living Museum of History

Next, you’ll head to Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site located just a few kilometers from the Taj Mahal. This massive red sandstone fortress served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors until the capital shifted to Delhi. Walking through its impressive gates and sprawling courtyards, you’ll discover palaces, mosques, and audience halls that tell stories of royal intrigue and architectural brilliance. Your guide will share fascinating insights into the fort’s cultural and historical significance, including its strategic importance and the legends of the emperors who once ruled here. The fort offers stunning views of the Taj Mahal from its ramparts, providing a unique perspective on this architectural marvel.

Authentic Mughlai Lunch Experience

After immersing yourself in history, you’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant known for its authentic Mughlai cuisine. This style of cooking, which developed in the royal kitchens of the Mughals, features rich, aromatic dishes blending Persian and Indian flavors. You’ll savor classics like tender kebabs, flavorful biryanis, and creamy kormas, all prepared with fresh ingredients and traditional techniques. This meal is not just nourishment but a taste of Agra’s culinary heritage—a perfect way to recharge before the afternoon’s activities.

Flexible Afternoon and Comfortable Return

Following lunch, your itinerary is flexible based on your interests. If you want to explore more, optional stops can be arranged, such as visiting the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah (often called the Baby Taj) or a local handicraft market where you can shop for marble inlay work and other souvenirs. Otherwise, you can relax and enjoy the atmosphere of Agra at your own pace.

You will depart around 5:00 PM for the comfortable drive back to Delhi, reflecting on a day filled with history, culture, and unforgettable sights. Your guide will drop you off at your hotel, ensuring you arrive safely and with plenty of memories to cherish.

This private sunrise tour was absolutley worth the early alarm. Our guide picked us up at 5am and we were at the gates of the Taj Mahal before sunrise. Watching the first light illuminate the white marble while the gardens were still shrouded in mist was truly magical. The colours shifted from pale blue to pink to gold within 30 minutes. After spending over 2 hours at the Taj we drove to Agra Fort which was equally impressive in the morning light. Having a private tour meant we could go at our own pace.

The private sunrise experience was spectacular. We entered the Taj Mahal complex just as the sky was turning orange and had the reflecting pool almost to ourselves for the first 20 minutes. The marble surface catches the sunrise colours in a way that photographs simply cannot capture. Our guide was extremely knowledgable about the architecture and the Mughal history. At Agra Fort afterward he showed us the octagonal tower where Shah Jahan was imprisoned and could only gaze at the Taj from afar.

Definately choose the sunrise option. The private tour format was perfect as our guide could adapt to our pace. At the Taj we spent time at each viewpoint as the light changed. The stillness of the early morning and the beauty of the sunrise on the marble was an emotional experience honestly. Agra Fort was a great addition, the red sandstone contrasts beautifully with the white marble of the Taj. Our guide showed us exactly where Shah Jahan could see the Taj from his prison window.

Beautiful sunrise at the Taj Mahal followed by a thorough visit to Agra Fort. The private tour meant no waiting for a group and we could spend as long as we wanted at each spot. The sunrise was stunning, the marble went through several colour changes as the sun rose. Agra Fort was also very impressive. Only giving 4 stars because the early morning was quite cold in February and I wish the tour description had warned us to bring warm clothing. The experience itself was outstanding.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise, and your guide meets you at the gate at this exact time — typically around 5:30–6:00 AM depending on the season (sunrise time varies from 5:30 AM in June to 7:00 AM in December). Being at the gates when they open means you experience the Taj Mahal in near-solitude, with soft golden light on the white marble before tour groups and day-trippers arrive. This is the most photographically spectacular and emotionally profound time to visit the monument. Pickup from your Agra hotel is arranged at approximately 5:00 AM to ensure punctual arrival.
Sunrise is universally agreed to be the best time to visit the Taj Mahal for three reasons: (1) Light — the rising sun casts warm gold and pink tones on the white marble, creating a photographic effect impossible at any other time; (2) Crowds — the monument receives up to 70,000 visitors per day, and sunrise means you may have entire sections nearly to yourself for the first 30–60 minutes; (3) Temperature — Agra can reach extreme heat by mid-morning (40°C+ in summer), and sunrise visits are significantly more comfortable. The Taj Mahal ticket price and opening hours are the same for all visitors.
Yes — after the Taj Mahal (approximately 2–2.5 hours sunrise visit), the tour moves to Agra Fort, which opens at 6 AM and is typically quiet in the early morning. Visiting Agra Fort immediately after sunrise at the Taj Mahal is the ideal combination: both sites when they are least crowded. Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a massive 16th-century red sandstone Mughal fortress containing palaces, audience halls, and the Musamman Burj tower where Shah Jahan was imprisoned and from which he gazed at the Taj Mahal in his final years. The Agra Fort visit takes approximately 1.5 hours with a guide.
Yes — entry tickets for both the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort are included for all participants. The Taj Mahal entry for foreign nationals is ₹1,300 (main complex) plus ₹200 for the inner mausoleum chamber. Agra Fort is ₹650. All tickets are purchased or pre-booked by your guide, eliminating the need to queue at ticket counters in the early morning. Note: the ₹200 mausoleum entry (to see the cenotaphs of Mumtaz and Shah Jahan inside the inner chamber) is specifically included — some lower-cost tours omit this.
Yes — this is a 100% private tour. Your guide and vehicle are exclusively assigned to your group for the entire experience. You will not be combined with other travellers, families, or groups at any point. This means the guide's full attention is on your questions, the pace is entirely controlled by you, and photography stops are as long or as brief as you wish. Private tours at sunrise are particularly valuable because the monument is already at its quietest — combining privacy with off-peak timing makes this the most premium Taj Mahal experience available.
Essential: A warm layer (Agra mornings can be surprisingly cool, especially November–February, with temperatures dropping to 8–12°C at dawn), comfortable walking shoes with easy removal (shoes must be removed at the inner mausoleum platform), and your passport or ID (required for ticket purchase). Recommended: A camera or phone with a good low-light mode for the pre-sunrise golden hour, a reusable water bottle (the heat intensifies quickly after 8 AM), and reef-safe or mineral sunscreen for the walk back. Not permitted: Food and drinks (other than sealed water), tripods without permits, selfie sticks, and tobacco.
The complete private sunrise tour typically runs 5–6 hours: approximately 30 minutes of transit from hotel to Taj Mahal (5:00 AM pickup), 2–2.5 hours at the Taj Mahal (sunrise visit + full guided tour), 15-minute transit to Agra Fort, 1.5 hours at Agra Fort, and return to hotel by approximately 11:00–11:30 AM. This timing is excellent — you complete both UNESCO World Heritage sites before the main tourist crowds arrive and before Agra's notorious midday heat becomes uncomfortable. Breakfast is often included at a local café after the Taj Mahal visit before heading to Agra Fort.
Yes — the sunrise tour operates year-round. The optimal season is October to March when temperatures at dawn are comfortable and visibility is clear. In December–January, winter mornings can be misty — fog sometimes settles over the Yamuna river, creating an ethereal atmosphere around the Taj Mahal that photographers specifically travel for. In April–June (summer), sunrise starts earlier (~5:30 AM) so the visit is completed before the worst heat. During monsoon (July–September), rain at dawn is possible but not common at 6 AM — dark skies create a dramatic backdrop. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.
Yes — Mehtab Bagh (the 'Moonlit Garden') can be added after Agra Fort and is one of the most rewarding extensions for photographers. Located on the opposite bank of the Yamuna river directly behind the Taj Mahal, Mehtab Bagh provides a unique north-facing view across the river to the rear of the Taj Mahal — a perspective that is completely different from the main complex and far less crowded. This was originally a Mughal garden designed to be the mirror image of the Taj Mahal gardens. Entry is approximately ₹300. Adding Mehtab Bagh extends the tour by 45–60 minutes.
Included: hotel pickup and drop-off in Agra, private air-conditioned vehicle for the full tour, Ministry of Tourism-licensed English-speaking guide, all entry tickets (Taj Mahal complex + inner mausoleum + Agra Fort), and overshoe covers for the inner mausoleum platform. Not included: personal expenses, tips (recommended for excellent service), optional camera/video permits inside monuments, and meals (breakfast can be added at an optional café stop). The price is transparent and all-inclusive of the major costs — no hidden fees or surprise charges at the gates.
Yes, the Taj Mahal is closed every Friday for religious reasons. Please ensure your tour date for the Taj Mahal does not fall on a Friday.
Yes, foreign tourists must show their original passport or a high-quality digital photo at the entrance gates for security identification and monument entry.
Sunrise is the best time to visit the Taj Mahal. The gates open at 6:00 AM and the soft morning light creates the most stunning views. Arrive by 5:30 AM to beat the crowds and get the best photography conditions.
