A 5am pickup, and a licensed guide waiting

The guide collects you at five or half past, and you are inside the complex as the gates open half an hour before sunrise. That is the whole design of this tour: no queue, no crowd, and the best light of the day.

The guides are government-approved — examined by the Ministry of Tourism and carrying a photo licence. It matters in Agra, where the gates are worked by men offering the same service without one.

Languages

One option here is a guide certified in a foreign language — French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese and others are all available in Agra with notice, and at the gate you will only find English and Hindi.

Sunrise

The marble reads grey, then pink, then a cold white as the sun clears the far bank of the Yamuna. In December and January mist lies on the river behind the dome. The crowd at that hour is a fifth of what it will be by ten.

Your guide covers the calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it reads uniformly from the ground; the pietra dura inlay of up to sixty stones per flower; the four minarets tilted outward so an earthquake would take them clear of the tomb; and the single asymmetry — Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off-axis by Aurangzeb.

On the longer options: Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside, and the Musamman Burj where he spent his last eight years imprisoned by his own son.

Practical

The Taj is closed on Fridays. Sunrise times shift through the year, so the pickup is set against your date.
