Two things about this one. The hour — the last ninety minutes before closing, when the marble takes colour and the crowd thins instead of building. And the guide, who is approved by the Ministry of Tourism rather than one of the many people who will offer you the same service at the gate.

The Taj at sunset

Pre-booked entry puts you in the shorter lane. Security screens everyone regardless: no tripods, no drones, no food, no large bags.

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, and white marble hauled 300 km from Makrana in Rajasthan.

Your guide covers what makes it more than a shape against the sky: the calligraphy cut in increasing sizes so it appears the same height from the ground; the pietra dura inlay, some single flowers holding sixty stones; the four minarets, leaning very slightly outward so that an earthquake would take them away from the tomb; and the illusion at the Darwaza-i-Rauza gateway, where the building seems to shrink as you approach it.

And the one break in the symmetry: Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off the central axis beside his wife's after his death.

The last half hour

The reason to come at this hour. The marble is translucent enough to hold light after the sun has left it, so the dome goes gold, then rose, then grey while everything around it has already dimmed.

The other monuments

On the fuller option the day extends to Agra's other sites — Agra Fort, where Shah Jahan died a prisoner of his own son with the Taj in view, and the Baby Taj across the Yamuna, the 1620s marble tomb that introduced pietra dura to India.
