Taj Mahal & Agra Fort Tou With Elephant sanctuary Visit

Two monuments and a genuinely good animal sanctuary

The elephant centre on the Delhi–Agra road is a rescue and care facility: the animals here came out of the begging trade, circuses, and the ride and wedding business, and most arrived with foot damage, blindness or wounds from the tools used to control them.

There is no riding, no performance and no bathing-with-the-elephants photo opportunity. What you do is watch them from a distance with keepers explaining each animal's history, and that is the correct way to visit an elephant.

If what you want is a picture on an elephant's back, this is the wrong booking, and the reason is the animal's spine rather than a policy.

08:30 — Taj Mahal

Shah Jahan began it in 1632 after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty thousand workers, twenty-two years, marble hauled 300 km from Makrana.

Your guide will show you the calligraphy cut larger as it rises so it reads evenly from the ground, the pietra dura flowers of dozens of inlaid stones, the minarets tilted outward so an earthquake would drop them clear of the tomb, and the one deliberate asymmetry in a building otherwise perfectly mirrored.

Agra Fort

Akbar's red sandstone stronghold of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside, and the Musamman Burj where Aurangzeb imprisoned him for the last eight years of his life with the Taj visible along the river.

The sanctuary

Afternoon. Feeding time is the best hour to be there — an adult elephant eats around 150 kg a day, and watching one work through sugarcane is oddly absorbing.

The keepers are the people to talk to. Several have worked with the same animal for years and can tell you exactly what it took to get it to trust a human again.

Practical

Thirteen hours door to door. The Taj is closed on Fridays.

No flash photography around the animals, and stay behind the barriers — these are large animals with reasons not to like people.
