Two monuments, both tickets, one guide

A compact Agra booking: you meet your guide at an agreed point in the city, and the tickets for both sites are already bought. That removes the two counters and the two queues, which on a busy morning is most of the friction in a day here.

Taj Mahal

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died bearing their fourteenth child. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, and white marble hauled 300 km from Makrana in Rajasthan.

A guide is what turns it into a building rather than a backdrop:

The calligraphy on the great arch is cut in progressively larger letters as it rises, so that from the ground every line appears the same height. The pietra dura inlay sets cornelian, jasper, lapis and jade flush into the marble — one flower can hold sixty separate pieces. The four minarets lean very slightly outward, so that an earthquake would drop them away from the tomb rather than onto it. And at the Darwaza-i-Rauza gateway, the Taj appears to shrink as you walk toward it, which is deliberate.

Inside, the jali screen and the two cenotaphs — the real graves are sealed in the crypt — and the one asymmetry in a perfectly mirrored building: Shah Jahan's own tomb, placed off-centre by Aurangzeb.

Agra Fort

Two kilometres upriver, and a walled city rather than a fort: two and a half kilometres of red sandstone begun by Akbar in 1565, with a double moat and an entrance gate angled so war elephants could not charge it straight.

Inside, Shah Jahan's marble: the Diwan-i-Am, the Khas Mahal, the Sheesh Mahal bath house. And the Musamman Burj, where Aurangzeb imprisoned his father for the last eight years of his life, with the Taj in view along the river.

Around four hours. The Taj is closed on Fridays; Agra Fort is open every day.
