Taj Mahal entry tickets in Agra

The tickets, handled

This is a ticket-and-guide combination rather than a full tour, and it solves the most irritating hour of a day in Agra: the Taj's ticket counter, which on a winter morning can run forty-five minutes before you even reach the security line.

Tickets are bought ahead. Your guide meets you at the gate and you walk into the shorter lane.

What you cannot skip

Security. Everyone is screened, and the prohibited list is enforced without discussion: no tripods, no drones, no food, no large bags, no lighters. Phones and small cameras are fine, and there are lockers at the entrance.

Taj Mahal

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, and white marble carted 300 km from Makrana.

Your guide covers the parts most visitors photograph without noticing: the calligraphy on the main arch, cut in increasing sizes so the letters read uniformly from the ground; the pietra dura inlay of cornelian, jasper and lapis, sometimes sixty stones in a single flower; the four minarets, tilted very slightly outward so an earthquake would take them clear of the tomb; and the one deliberate break in the symmetry — Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off-centre by Aurangzeb after his death.

Agra Fort

On the combo ticket. Akbar's red sandstone city of 1565 with Shah Jahan's marble palaces inside, and the Musamman Burj where Aurangzeb imprisoned his father for eight years, with the Taj visible down the river.

Practical

The Taj is closed on Fridays; Agra Fort is open every day.

Entry for foreign nationals is ₹1,100 at the Taj plus ₹200 for the mausoleum chamber, and ₹650 at the fort.
