What the express ticket actually buys
The Taj has separate ticket windows and separate entry lanes. On a winter morning the main counter can cost you forty-five minutes before you even reach security. Pre-arranged priority entry puts you straight into the shorter lane.
It does not skip the security check, and nothing does. The prohibited list is enforced without discussion: no tripods, no drones, no food, no large bags, no cigarettes or lighters. Phones and small cameras are fine. Lockers at the gate for the rest.
Meeting your guide
A government-approved guide meets you near the entrance. That approval matters in Agra, where unlicensed guides work every gate and the difference in what you learn is considerable.
Inside the complex
Through the Darwaza-i-Rauza, the great red sandstone gateway, where the Taj appears through the arch and — because of a deliberate trick of proportion — seems to shrink as you walk toward it.
Then the charbagh, the four-part garden split by water channels, laid out so the tomb reflects down the full length of the central pool.
At the plinth: the calligraphy on the main arch, cut in progressively larger letters so it appears uniform from the ground; the pietra dura inlay, where a single flower can carry sixty pieces of cornelian, jasper, lapis and jade; and the four minarets, each tilted fractionally outward so that an earthquake would drop them away from the tomb rather than onto it.
Inside the chamber, the jali screen and the two cenotaphs — and the one asymmetry in a perfectly mirrored building, Shah Jahan's own tomb, placed off-centre by his son after his death.

The first hour after opening is the best of the day — cooler, emptier, and the marble runs grey to pink to white as the sun comes up.
