Three hours is the right amount of time for the Taj. Long enough to walk the gardens, go inside the mausoleum and circle round to the river terrace. Short enough that you are out before the middle of the day, when the marble throws back the heat and the crowds peak.
How it runs
Your guide meets you at the gate with the tickets already sorted, so you go through the entry lane rather than queueing for them. From the Great Gate you get the first framed view of the dome, then the gardens and the reflecting pool, the main platform, and the interior with the cenotaphs and the carved marble screens. Your guide covers the build, the inlay work, the calligraphy that grows in size as it rises so it reads evenly from the ground, and which of the famous stories about Shah Jahan hold up.
