A photo shoot that happens to be at the Taj Mahal

This is not a sightseeing tour with photographs attached. The photographer-guide plans the sequence around the light, positions you, directs the poses, and works through the site in the order that the sun dictates. You get an edited set afterwards.

Why sunrise specifically

The gates open half an hour before sunrise. For the first forty minutes the crowd is a fraction of what it becomes, which means the central bench and the water channel are actually shootable, and the marble passes through grey, pink and gold before it settles to white.

By nine the light is flat and there are two hundred people on the axis. The whole tour depends on being early.

The shot list

The Diana bench with the dome centred and nobody behind you. The reflection in the long pool. Silhouettes against the rising sun. Forced perspective — the pinch, the palm, the hold — which is more fun to do than it is to read about. Framing through arches in the gateway and along the mosque's colonnade. Portraits in the red sandstone of the Darwaza, where the warm stone works against the white marble.

If you have something specific in mind, bring references; it is one photographer and you, not a group.

Practical

The Taj is closed on Fridays.

No tripods, no drones, no large bags — security is strict and there is no negotiating at the gate. Everything is shot handheld.

Wear something that holds a colour against white marble; red, yellow and deep blue photograph far better than white or beige. Saris and lehengas can be arranged locally if you want that.

Entry for foreign nationals is ₹1,100, plus ₹200 for the mausoleum chamber.
