Mehtab Bagh sits directly across the Yamuna from the Taj Mahal, and it was laid out to be exactly that: a garden aligned with the tomb so the building could be looked at from a distance, reflected in a pool, in the evening. The alignment is precise. Stand in the right spot and the dome sits centred between the minarets with the river in front of it.
This is the best view of the Taj that does not involve going inside it, and on a clear evening near the full moon the marble genuinely does glow.
How it runs
Hotel or airport pickup within Agra in a private air-conditioned car. Your government-approved guide takes you across the river to Mehtab Bagh for the evening, explains the garden's history and the sightlines, and finds the angles that work. About three hours in total.

This is not the official Taj night viewing. That is a separate ASI ticket, sold only at their office 24 hours ahead, limited to 400 people across five nights a month around the full moon, and it puts you inside the complex rather than across the river.
Moonlight depends on the moon. Book within a few days of a full moon for the effect the name promises; on other nights it is still the best long view of the building.
Tripods are permitted here, unlike inside the Taj complex, which is why serious photographers come.
