The Baby Taj is what gets cut when an Agra day runs short, and it is the building that explains the other two.
Taj Mahal at sunrise
The gate opens about half an hour before dawn and the first batch has the complex nearly to itself. The marble reads grey, then pink, then white as the sun comes up behind the dome. It is also the only comfortable hour between April and July.
Agra Fort
Red sandstone outside, marble palaces within. The Diwan-i-Am where the emperor heard public petitions, the Jahangir Palace, and the Musamman Burj — the octagonal tower where Shah Jahan spent his last eight years imprisoned by his son, with the Taj visible across the river.
Itimad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj
Nur Jahan built it for her father between 1622 and 1628, two decades before the Taj Mahal. It is the first Mughal building faced entirely in white marble and the first to use pietra dura inlay at scale. Nearly everything the Taj is celebrated for was worked out here first, at a size where you can stand close enough to see how it was done. It is small, shaded, and usually almost empty.
