The Taj in the last light

Sunrise gets the attention. Sunset is the easier visit and, for a lot of people, the better one: no four o'clock alarm, warm amber light rather than cold white, and a crowd that thins toward closing instead of building.

Skip the line

Pre-booked entry puts you in the shorter lane at the gate. Security applies to everyone regardless, and the prohibited list is firm: no tripods, no drones, no food, no large bags. There are lockers at the entrance.

Inside

Shah Jahan began it in 1632, the year after Mumtaz Mahal died. Twenty-two years, twenty thousand workers, and marble hauled 300 km from Makrana.

Your guide covers the parts that make it more than a silhouette: the calligraphy on the great arch, cut in increasing sizes so that it appears uniform from the ground; the pietra dura inlay, with as many as sixty stones in one flower; the four minarets, tilted very slightly outward so an earthquake would take them away from the tomb rather than through it; and the illusion at the Darwaza-i-Rauza gateway, where the Taj looks smaller the closer you get.

And the single asymmetry: Shah Jahan's own cenotaph, placed off the central axis by Aurangzeb, in a building that is otherwise perfectly mirrored.

The last half hour

The reason to be here at this hour. The marble is translucent enough to hold colour after the sun is off it — gold, then rose, then grey — and the dome is the last thing still lit.

Practical

Closed Fridays. Last entry is before sunset rather than at it, and the time moves through the year, so pickup is set against your date.
