Two and a half hours: picked up from your hotel, walked through the Taj with a guide on a pre-booked ticket, and dropped back. Nothing else.

That is the right amount of time for the monument if you have a train to catch or a second day planned, and the pre-booked entry is what makes it possible — the ticket counter alone can take forty-five minutes in season.

What is included

Driver pickup from your hotel or chosen location in Agra, the express admission ticket, and a guide who meets you at the gate.

What cannot be skipped

Security, for everyone. No tripods, no drones, no food, no large bags, no lighters. Phones and small cameras are fine; lockers at the entrance take the rest.

Inside

Through the Darwaza-i-Rauza, the great red sandstone gateway, where the Taj appears in the arch and — because of a deliberate trick of proportion — seems to shrink as you approach it.

Then the charbagh, the four-part garden split by water channels, with the tomb reflecting down the length of the central pool.

At the plinth: the calligraphy on the main arch, cut in progressively larger letters so that it reads the same height from the ground; the pietra dura inlay, where one flower can hold sixty pieces of cornelian, jasper, lapis and jade; and the four minarets, each tilted fractionally outward so that an earthquake would drop them away from the tomb rather than onto it.

Inside the chamber, the carved jali screen and the two cenotaphs — and the single asymmetry in a perfectly mirrored building: Shah Jahan's own tomb, placed off-centre by his son. The real graves are sealed in the crypt below.
