Detailed Itinerary

Fun Cooking Class at Pum's Thai Restaurant & Cooking School (Phuket)

Join us at Pum's Thai Restaurant & Cooking School in the heart of Phuket for an unforgettable three-hour culinary adventure that combines hands-on learning, authentic flavors, and plenty of fun. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced home cook curious about Thai cuisine, our modern, fully equipped kitchen provides the perfect, relaxed setting to learn the fundamentals and hidden touches that make Thai food so beloved worldwide. Our friendly instructors—local chefs with years of professional experience—will guide you step by step through techniques, flavor balancing, and presentation so you come away confident and inspired.

Presentation of Thai sauces and herbs

The experience begins with an engaging introduction to the essential sauces, herbs, and pastes that form the backbone of Thai cooking. You’ll be introduced to classics like fish sauce, oyster sauce, and soy sauce, and you’ll learn how each one contributes to Thailand’s characteristic interplay of salty, sweet, sour, and spicy. We’ll also explore the colorful world of Thai chilies and chili pastes—from the fragrant heat of fresh bird’s eye chilies to the deeper, smoky notes of roasted chili pastes—explaining how chili intensity and flavor vary and how to use them to match your personal spice tolerance.

Fresh aromatics are another cornerstone of Thai cuisine. Your teacher will present and demonstrate galangal, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, Thai basil, cilantro, and other herbs, allowing you to smell and taste each one so you can recognize them by aroma and texture. We’ll explain their culinary roles and the science behind how they release flavor—when to bruise lemongrass, how to slice galangal for maximum aroma, and what substitutes work in a pinch. You’ll be encouraged to ask questions and sample everything; curiosity is welcomed and celebrated in our kitchen.

Cooking Time!

After this flavorful orientation, it’s time for the hands-on portion: Cooking Time! Each participant selects three dishes from our curated menu that spans soups, stir-fries, curries, salads, and desserts—classic favorites like Tom Yum Goong, Green Curry, Pad Thai, Som Tam (spicy green papaya salad), and Mango Sticky Rice are often featured. We prepare all ingredients in advance to let you focus on technique, but you’ll chop, stir, season, and plate your dishes at your own cooking station. Our instructors coach you through each step, demonstrating methods such as proper stir-frying heat control, curry paste frying, and rice steaming techniques, ensuring a smooth learning curve and lots of hands-on practice.

Eating Time!

Cooking is more fun when shared, and Eating Time is a relaxed, communal part of the class where you sit down with your cooking buddies to savor the fruits of your labor. Everything you prepare will be served hot and accompanied by fragrant Thai steamed rice and drinking water at no additional cost. The atmosphere is convivial—swap tips with other students, sample each other’s dishes, and enjoy the balance of textures and bold flavors you created. If you prefer to take your food with you, simply ask and we’ll pack it up so you can enjoy your creations later.

Shopping Time!

Before you leave, make sure to stop by our merchandise shop where you can browse a selection of carefully chosen Thai ingredients and cooking tools. Our merchandise shop stocks essentials like authentic curry pastes, coconut milk, rice noodles, pandan leaves, and specialty sauces alongside quality kitchen utensils such as woks, spatulas, ladles, and mortar and pestles. Pum’s own cookbooks are available too—perfect for recreating your new favorite dishes at home or giving as a thoughtful gift to friends and family. Our staff can advise which products best match the dishes you learned and suggest items for beginners looking to start a Thai pantry.

Pum’s Thai Restaurant & Cooking School offers more than a class—it’s a sensory journey through Thai culinary tradition led by passionate local chefs. Whether you’re on holiday in Phuket or living locally, our three-hour workshop is designed to be educational, delicious, and immensely enjoyable. Come ready to taste, learn, cook, and leave with new skills, new friends, and a greater appreciation for Thailand’s vibrant cuisine.

Honestly the best thing we did in Phuket. Our teacher trained under Pum herself and was so patient explaining the whole Lazy Cuisine idea. I picked green curry, tom yum and mango sticky rice and every single one came out restaurant-good. Sitting down to eat it all afterwards in the dining room was so satisfying. Came home with the cookbook too.

As someone who cooks a lot at home I was worried it would be too basic, but choosing my own three dishes made all the difference. The teacher tweaked the pad thai technique for me and I have already remade it twice back in Milan. Three hours flew by. The new school space is spotless and well set up.

We privatised the class for our group of seven and it was perfect for a birthday. Everyone got to cook their own three plates and the teacher kept it lively and fun. Loads of laughing and loads of photos. The fact that Pum's has been going since 2001 really shows in how smoothly everything ran. Highly recommend for groups.

Really enjoyable and great value for what you get, all ingredients, equipment and a cookbook included. My only small gripe is there is no hotel pickup, so we had to sort a Grab to the new location and the driver initially struggled to find it. Once there it was excellent. The teacher was warm and the food we made was delicious.

Such a fun afternoon and a nice break from beaches and boat trips. I am vegetarian and had zero trouble, they helped me choose three veggie dishes and adapted them beautifully. Standing at your own station actually cooking, not just watching, is what makes this one special. Left full, happy and with a book of recipes I will actually use.

Booked this on our last day and glad we did. The introduction to the Lazy Cuisine philosophy was genuinely useful, quick recipes you can do at home without twenty ingredients. My wife and I each made three different dishes so between us we tried six. Great value at the price and the staff could not have been friendlier.

A lovely hands-on class with a teacher who clearly knew her craft. It does get warm in the cooking area once all the woks are going, so bring something light to wear. That aside, choosing my own three plates was a treat and eating them together at the end felt like a proper meal. Good introduction to real Thai cooking.

Took this with my teenage kids and it was a highlight of the whole Phuket trip. They loved picking their own dishes and the teacher made everyone feel involved. Plenty of action and yes, plenty of photos. Ate everything we cooked right there and even browsed the little shop after. Oldest school in Phuket for a reason.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 3-hour class covers everything you need: a welcome and introduction to Pum's Lazy Cuisine, all ingredients, professional cooking equipment, Thai rice and drinking water, and a copy of Pum's first cookbook to take home. You'll cook and then sit down to eat what you made in our dining room. At $62 per person, there are no hidden extras once you're booked.
You'll prepare 3 recipes of your choice, selected from our extensive dish list before you head to the cooking area. This is one of the things guests love most, you're not stuck with a fixed menu. Whether you're after a fragrant green curry, a punchy tom yum or a classic pad thai, you pick the three that appeal to you.
Pum's Lazy Cuisine is a modern, streamlined take on Thai cooking that Pum developed while studying in the UK. The whole idea is dead-easy, quick recipes you can actually recreate at home without hunting down obscure ingredients or spending hours in the kitchen. Your teacher, personally trained by Pum, introduces the concept before you start cooking.
Hotel pickup is not included with this class, so you'll make your own way to the school. We're at a brand new location and the address with directions is sent on confirmation. A taxi or Grab from most Phuket beach areas is quick and inexpensive, and staff are happy to help arrange your return trip afterwards.
None at all. The entire philosophy of Pum's Lazy Cuisine is that Thai food can be simple and quick, so complete beginners feel right at home. Your Pum-trained teacher guides you step by step, and because you're cooking just 3 dishes over 3 hours, the pace is relaxed and there's plenty of time to ask questions.
Yes. Because you choose your 3 dishes from an extensive list, there are plenty of vegetarian-friendly options, and the recipes can often be adapted. Please tell us about any allergies or dietary needs (nuts, shellfish, gluten) when you book so your teacher can prepare accordingly and suggest the best dishes for you.
Absolutely, it's a fun-filled, hands-on experience that families enjoy together, though younger children should be supervised around the cooking stations. The class is done at a comfortable pace over 3 hours with plenty of sitting time to eat, so it also suits older travellers well. If you're cooking as a family, let us know ages so the teacher can tailor the involvement.
You get to eat it! After cooking, you'll enjoy your 3 dishes in our dining room with Thai rice and drinking water. If you'd rather head off, you can take your food to go instead. Many guests say sitting down to eat what they just made is the highlight of the whole class.
Yes, the experience can be privatised starting from 6 guests. That's ideal for families, groups of friends or a special occasion where you'd like the teacher and kitchen to yourselves. If you're a smaller group you'll join a shared class, which is a great way to meet other travellers over a shared love of Thai food.
Definitely, we tell guests to be ready for lots of action and lots of photos. It's a lively, hands-on class and the colourful ingredients, herbs and finished dishes make for great pictures. Feel free to bring your phone or camera to capture the process and your plated results.
Pum's was established in 2001 and is the oldest cooking school in Phuket, so you're learning from a genuinely experienced team. That said, the school has moved to a brand new location, so you get decades of teaching know-how in a fresh, modern teaching room and cooking area.
Wear light, comfortable clothing suited to Phuket's warm, humid climate, plus closed or secure shoes since you'll be standing and moving around a working kitchen. It's sensible to avoid your very best outfit in case of a splash. The cooking area is comfortable, and everything you need including equipment is provided.
The class runs for 3 hours and works well at various times of day, so it's easy to slot around other plans. A morning or midday class pairs nicely with a relaxed evening, while an afternoon slot means you finish with a full dinner already cooked. It's a great indoor, weather-proof activity if you're saving the beach and island days for sunshine.
It's a perfect low-key day to balance more active adventures. Many guests combine it with a Phi Phi Islands catamaran day trip to Maya Bay or a James Bond Island speedboat tour with canoeing earlier in their stay. If you love the kitchen, you might also enjoy a market-tour cooking class in Kata for a different Thai-cooking angle.
Yes, after eating you're welcome to visit our shop, where you can buy Pum's products and souvenirs to take a taste of Thailand home with you. It's entirely optional. You already receive Pum's first cookbook as part of the class, so you'll leave with the recipes even if you don't shop.
Booking online is quick, choose your date, and you'll receive confirmation with the new school address and details. Because you select your 3 dishes in advance and it's a small hands-on class, please let us know of any changes as early as possible. Reach out to our team for the specific cancellation window and any dietary or group requests when you reserve. If you'd prefer a fully private class, remember it's available from 6 guests.

The dry season from November to April offers the best weather for island-hopping tours and beach activities. December to March is peak season with calm seas, perfect for Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay boat trips. May to October (monsoon) is quieter and cheaper but some boat tours may be affected by rough seas. See our Phuket travel guide for detailed month-by-month advice.
Phuket is one of Southeast Asia's safest tourist destinations with excellent infrastructure, friendly locals, and a strong tourist police presence. Standard precautions apply: use reputable transport, stay aware in crowded areas, and book verified tours through trusted platforms. For water activities, all our tours include safety equipment and experienced crew.
The top experiences include: the Phi Phi Islands for snorkeling and Maya Bay, Phang Nga Bay for dramatic limestone cliffs and James Bond Island, the Big Buddha for panoramic views, Wat Chalong temple, and the charming Phuket Old Town for street food and Sino-Portuguese architecture. See our things to do guide for the complete list.
Yes! Direct flights between Phuket and Bangkok take just 1 hour 20 minutes. We recommend 3–4 days in Phuket for island tours, then 2–3 days in Bangkok for temples, markets, and street food. Our local guides operate in both cities for seamless trip planning.
We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering water sports before booking any speedboat tour or island-hopping excursion. While all our boats carry safety equipment and licensed crews, Thai hospital costs can be significant without coverage. Ensure your policy covers emergency medical evacuation and water activity accidents.
