Detailed Itinerary
Fun Cooking Class at Pum's Thai Restaurant & Cooking School (Phuket)
Join us at Pum's Thai Restaurant & Cooking School in the heart of Phuket for an unforgettable three-hour culinary adventure that combines hands-on learning, authentic flavors, and plenty of fun. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced home cook curious about Thai cuisine, our modern, fully equipped kitchen provides the perfect, relaxed setting to learn the fundamentals and hidden touches that make Thai food so beloved worldwide. Our friendly instructors—local chefs with years of professional experience—will guide you step by step through techniques, flavor balancing, and presentation so you come away confident and inspired.
Presentation of Thai sauces and herbs
The experience begins with an engaging introduction to the essential sauces, herbs, and pastes that form the backbone of Thai cooking. You’ll be introduced to classics like fish sauce, oyster sauce, and soy sauce, and you’ll learn how each one contributes to Thailand’s characteristic interplay of salty, sweet, sour, and spicy. We’ll also explore the colorful world of Thai chilies and chili pastes—from the fragrant heat of fresh bird’s eye chilies to the deeper, smoky notes of roasted chili pastes—explaining how chili intensity and flavor vary and how to use them to match your personal spice tolerance.
Fresh aromatics are another cornerstone of Thai cuisine. Your teacher will present and demonstrate galangal, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, Thai basil, cilantro, and other herbs, allowing you to smell and taste each one so you can recognize them by aroma and texture. We’ll explain their culinary roles and the science behind how they release flavor—when to bruise lemongrass, how to slice galangal for maximum aroma, and what substitutes work in a pinch. You’ll be encouraged to ask questions and sample everything; curiosity is welcomed and celebrated in our kitchen.
Cooking Time!
After this flavorful orientation, it’s time for the hands-on portion: Cooking Time! Each participant selects three dishes from our curated menu that spans soups, stir-fries, curries, salads, and desserts—classic favorites like Tom Yum Goong, Green Curry, Pad Thai, Som Tam (spicy green papaya salad), and Mango Sticky Rice are often featured. We prepare all ingredients in advance to let you focus on technique, but you’ll chop, stir, season, and plate your dishes at your own cooking station. Our instructors coach you through each step, demonstrating methods such as proper stir-frying heat control, curry paste frying, and rice steaming techniques, ensuring a smooth learning curve and lots of hands-on practice.
Eating Time!
Cooking is more fun when shared, and Eating Time is a relaxed, communal part of the class where you sit down with your cooking buddies to savor the fruits of your labor. Everything you prepare will be served hot and accompanied by fragrant Thai steamed rice and drinking water at no additional cost. The atmosphere is convivial—swap tips with other students, sample each other’s dishes, and enjoy the balance of textures and bold flavors you created. If you prefer to take your food with you, simply ask and we’ll pack it up so you can enjoy your creations later.
Shopping Time!
Before you leave, make sure to stop by our merchandise shop where you can browse a selection of carefully chosen Thai ingredients and cooking tools. Our merchandise shop stocks essentials like authentic curry pastes, coconut milk, rice noodles, pandan leaves, and specialty sauces alongside quality kitchen utensils such as woks, spatulas, ladles, and mortar and pestles. Pum’s own cookbooks are available too—perfect for recreating your new favorite dishes at home or giving as a thoughtful gift to friends and family. Our staff can advise which products best match the dishes you learned and suggest items for beginners looking to start a Thai pantry.
Pum’s Thai Restaurant & Cooking School offers more than a class—it’s a sensory journey through Thai culinary tradition led by passionate local chefs. Whether you’re on holiday in Phuket or living locally, our three-hour workshop is designed to be educational, delicious, and immensely enjoyable. Honestly the best thing we did in Phuket. Our teacher trained under Pum herself and was so patient explaining the whole Lazy Cuisine idea. I picked green curry, tom yum and mango sticky rice and every single one came out restaurant-good. Sitting down to eat it all afterwards in the dining room was so satisfying. Came home with the cookbook too.
As someone who cooks a lot at home I was worried it would be too basic, but choosing my own three dishes made all the difference. The teacher tweaked the pad thai technique for me and I have already remade it twice back in Milan. Three hours flew by. The new school space is spotless and well set up.
We privatised the class for our group of seven and it was perfect for a birthday. Everyone got to cook their own three plates and the teacher kept it lively and fun. Loads of laughing and loads of photos. The fact that Pum's has been going since 2001 really shows in how smoothly everything ran. Highly recommend for groups.
Really enjoyable and great value for what you get, all ingredients, equipment and a cookbook included. My only small gripe is there is no hotel pickup, so we had to sort a Grab to the new location and the driver initially struggled to find it. Once there it was excellent. The teacher was warm and the food we made was delicious.
Such a fun afternoon and a nice break from beaches and boat trips. I am vegetarian and had zero trouble, they helped me choose three veggie dishes and adapted them beautifully. Standing at your own station actually cooking, not just watching, is what makes this one special. Left full, happy and with a book of recipes I will actually use.
Booked this on our last day and glad we did. The introduction to the Lazy Cuisine philosophy was genuinely useful, quick recipes you can do at home without twenty ingredients. My wife and I each made three different dishes so between us we tried six. Great value at the price and the staff could not have been friendlier.
A lovely hands-on class with a teacher who clearly knew her craft. It does get warm in the cooking area once all the woks are going, so bring something light to wear. That aside, choosing my own three plates was a treat and eating them together at the end felt like a proper meal. Good introduction to real Thai cooking.
Took this with my teenage kids and it was a highlight of the whole Phuket trip. They loved picking their own dishes and the teacher made everyone feel involved. Plenty of action and yes, plenty of photos. Ate everything we cooked right there and even browsed the little shop after. Oldest school in Phuket for a reason.
