This was such a unique experience! We started at the local market in the morning where our chef showed us how to pick fresh ingredients, explained the different types of chili and which ones to use for what, and taught us how to smell test lemongrass for freshness. Then we drove to the jungle kitchen which is literally in the hills above Kata surrounded by tropical plants. Cooked 4 dishes including a curry paste from scratch using a mortar and pestle. My arms were sore but the result was amazing.

The market tour in the morning was worth the price alone. Our instructor showed us ingredients I had never seen before and explained how Thai people actually shop and cook at home, which is very different from what you see in tourist restaurants. The jungle location for the cooking class was magical, cooking outdoors with birds chirping and a view of the hills. We made som tam, pad kra pao, a coconut soup, and mango sticky rice for dessert. Every single dish was delicious.

Loved the hands on approach of this class. The morning market visit was really educational, learning about ingredients at the source. The cooking school itself is in the Phuket jungle near Kata which makes for a gorgeous setting. Made 4 dishes and ate everything we cooked which was a lot of food! The recipes are authentic Thai home cooking style not restaurant style. Only small critique is the morning start (7:30am market pickup) is quite early if youre on holiday.

As a home cook I always look for cooking classes when traveling and this one exceeded expectations. The market tour was fascinating, our chef was bargaining in Thai and getting the freshest produce while explaining everything to us. The jungle kitchen is beautiful, open air under a tin roof with herb gardens all around. Making curry paste by hand in a stone mortar was hard work but the flavour difference compared to store bought paste is night and day. Highly reccomend the morning class.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Thai cooking class in Kata stands out because of its unique jungle kitchen setting — you cook outdoors surrounded by tropical vegetation, herbs, and fruit trees in the hills above Kata Beach. Unlike hotel-based or indoor cooking schools, this open-air environment connects you with the ingredients growing around you. The class begins with a guided market tour at a local Kata wet market, giving you a full farm-to-table journey. This combination of market education + jungle atmosphere + hands-on cooking creates an immersive experience that goes far beyond following a recipe.
The Kata cooking class begins with a guided tour of a local Thai wet market near Kata. Your instructor walks you through the stalls, explaining how to select fresh ingredients: choosing the most fragrant lemongrass, identifying the difference between Thai basil and holy basil, picking the best coconut milk, and understanding the dozens of chilli varieties. You will see and smell ingredients you may never have encountered — fresh galangal root, kaffir lime leaves, palm sugar, and fermented shrimp paste. The market tour lasts approximately 30–45 minutes and sets the foundation for understanding Thai flavour profiles before you start cooking.
You prepare 4–5 dishes during the Thai cooking class in Kata, which is slightly more than most Phuket cooking schools. The menu typically includes a curry (green or red), a stir-fry dish, a soup (Tom Yum or Tom Kha), a noodle dish (Pad Thai), and sometimes a Thai dessert. Each dish is cooked individually at your own station, so you learn the complete process from ingredient preparation through to plating. The variety ensures you experience the key pillars of Thai cooking: hot, sour, sweet, and salty flavour balance. You eat everything you prepare as a full multi-course meal.
The morning class at the Kata jungle kitchen starts at approximately 8:30–9:00 AM with the market tour, and the full experience finishes around 1:00–1:30 PM. Hotel pickup begins at approximately 8:00 AM depending on your hotel location. The total duration is around 4–5 hours including transfers, market visit, cooking, and eating. The morning slot is the most popular because the market is freshest early in the day, the jungle kitchen is cooler before midday heat, and you have the entire afternoon free for beach time or other activities like a private surf lesson at Kata Beach.
Yes — complimentary hotel pickup and drop-off is included from hotels in Kata, Karon, Patong, and surrounding areas for the Thai cooking class in Kata. The driver collects you from your hotel lobby in the morning and returns you after the class. Hotels further north (Bangtao, Surin, Mai Khao) may incur a small additional transfer fee — confirm when booking. The total time away from your hotel is approximately 5 hours including all transfers, market tour, cooking, and lunch. If you are staying near Cherngtalay, the Seasoning Thai cooking class is closer to your hotel.
Both are excellent, but they offer different experiences. The Kata cooking class features a jungle kitchen setting, includes a local market tour, teaches 4–5 dishes, runs in the morning, and emphasises the full farm-to-table journey. The Seasoning class in Cherngtalay offers a more polished, garden-kitchen environment, focuses on 3–4 signature dishes (Tom Yum, Pad Thai, Green Curry), and runs in both morning and afternoon sessions. Choose Kata if you value the market tour and rustic atmosphere; choose Cherngtalay if you prefer a refined setting closer to northern beaches. Many food enthusiasts do both for a complete Thai culinary education.
Yes — the Thai cooking class in Kata fully accommodates vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary requirements with advance notice of at least 24 hours. The instructor substitutes tofu, mushrooms, and vegetables for meat, and uses soy-based alternatives to fish sauce and oyster sauce for vegan guests. The beauty of Thai cooking is that the aromatic base — lemongrass, galangal, chilli, garlic, kaffir lime — is naturally plant-based, so vegetarian versions retain authentic flavour. Gluten-free, nut-free, and halal accommodations are also available. Inform the operator when booking so ingredients are prepared correctly.
No cooking experience whatsoever is required for the Thai cooking class in Kata. The class is designed for complete beginners and the instructor demonstrates every step — from slicing lemongrass to controlling wok temperature — before you replicate it at your own station. The pace is relaxed and patient, with the instructor circulating to help anyone who needs guidance. Experienced home cooks will also enjoy the class as it reveals authentic Thai techniques and ingredient knowledge that elevate home cooking significantly. The jungle kitchen atmosphere makes even seasoned chefs feel they are learning something genuinely new.
Yes — every participant at the Kata cooking class receives a printed recipe booklet with complete instructions for all dishes taught during the session. The booklet includes ingredient lists with both Thai and Western names, step-by-step cooking instructions, the instructor's personal tips, and suggested substitutions for ingredients that may be hard to find outside Thailand (e.g., using regular basil as a partial substitute for Thai holy basil). The recipes are tested for home kitchen replication so you can recreate your Phuket cooking experience when you return home.
Bring: a camera or phone for photos and videos (the jungle kitchen is very photogenic), comfortable lightweight clothing that you do not mind getting splashed with sauce or oil, closed-toe shoes for the market tour (wet floors), mosquito repellent for the jungle setting, and a light appetite — you will eat a full multi-course meal of everything you cook. Provided for you: apron, all ingredients, all cooking equipment, drinking water, and recipe booklet. Leave behind: heavy bags, valuables, and sandals without heel straps (the jungle paths can be slippery). For more Phuket activity planning, see our Phuket things to do guide.
Yes — children aged 5 and above can participate in the Thai cooking class in Kata with parental supervision. The jungle setting adds excitement for kids, and the market tour is an educational adventure — seeing tropical fruits, live seafood, and exotic spices for the first time. The instructor adjusts spice levels for young palates and involves children in safe, age-appropriate tasks like pounding curry paste, mixing ingredients, and taste-testing. Kids under 5 can attend as observers for free. For families, combining the morning cooking class with an afternoon Elephant Beach Experience creates an unforgettable full-day itinerary.
