Our official tour guide at the Taj Mahal was absolutley brilliant. He knew every single detail about the inlay work on the marble, the semi-precious stones used in the pietra dura, and the symmetry of the gardens. At Agra Fort he showed us the spot where Shah Jahan was imprisoned and could see the Taj from his window, which was such a poignant moment. Having an official guide with a government ID badge meant we skipped right past the touts at the entrance.
Booking an official guide for both the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort was the right decision. He explained the Mughal architecture in a way that was easy to understand and pointed out details I never would have noticed on my own, like the optical illusion with the minarets leaning slightly outward. At Agra Fort the Diwan-i-Khas and Sheesh Mahal were highlights. Very professional and knowledgable.
Good experience overall with our certified guide at both monuments. The Taj Mahal portion was excellent, he took us around the back side where fewer tourists go and explained the calligraphy from the Quran on the gateway. Agra Fort was also interesting but felt a little rushed as we only had about an hour there. I would reccomend asking for more time at the fort if you can.
The official guide made our visit to the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort so much more meaningful. He explained how the marble changes color depending on the time of day, pinkish at sunrise and golden at sunset. Inside the fort he showed us the grape vine carvings and the tiny mosque that most visitors walk right past. He also helped us avoid the scam artists outside. Definately worth the booking fee.
Even as an Indian I learned so much from our guide at the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. He shared stories about Mumtaz Mahal and the 20,000 workers who built the Taj over 22 years that I had never heard before. At Agra Fort the Jahangiri Mahal was stunning with its Hindu and Islamic architectural blend. His official credentials got us through security quickly. Highly reccomend for anyone visiting Agra.
