Detailed Itinerary

Early Morning Departure from Delhi

Your unforgettable journey begins with a prompt 6:00 AM pickup from your hotel in Delhi or the National Capital Region (NCR). You'll step into a comfortable air-conditioned sedan, setting off on a scenic 3.5-hour drive along the Yamuna Expressway. As you leave the bustling city behind, enjoy views of the peaceful countryside dotted with farmlands and small villages. This early start not only lets you beat the crowds but also ensures you make the most of your day exploring two of India’s most iconic monuments.

Marvel at the Taj Mahal: A Timeless Symbol of Love

Arriving in Agra mid-morning, your first stop is the breathtaking Taj Mahal. This UNESCO World Heritage site needs little introduction, but your professional guide will bring its story to life. You’ll learn about the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan’s love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, inspiring the construction of this white marble masterpiece from 1632 to 1653. As you stroll through the pristine gardens and gaze at the intricate inlay work and calligraphy, your guide will highlight architectural details you might otherwise miss. Thanks to skip-the-line entry, you’ll avoid long waits and spend more time soaking in the serene beauty of this monument.

Explore the Historic Agra Fort

Next, you'll visit Agra Fort, located just a few kilometers from the Taj Mahal. This massive red sandstone fortress was the imperial residence of the Mughal emperors before the Taj was built. Your guide will walk you through its grand palaces, audience halls, mosques, and military structures, explaining their strategic and cultural significance. From the fort’s ramparts, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Taj Mahal across the Yamuna River, perfect for capturing memorable photographs. The blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles reflects Agra’s rich history as a melting pot of cultures.

Authentic Mughlai Lunch Experience

By midday, you’ll be ready to savor the flavors of Agra with lunch at a local restaurant specializing in Mughlai cuisine. This regional culinary style is known for its rich, aromatic dishes featuring tender meats, fragrant spices, and slow-cooked gravies. Your meal might include classics such as kebabs, biryanis, and creamy korma, freshly prepared to offer an authentic taste of Mughal heritage. The restaurant’s ambiance will give you a feel for the local dining culture, providing a restful break before the afternoon exploration.

Optional Sightseeing and Flexible Afternoon Plans

After lunch, your guide can arrange optional visits to other attractions in Agra upon request. Whether you want to explore the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, often called the “Baby Taj,” or visit local markets known for marble handicrafts and leather goods, the itinerary can be tailored to your interests. This flexibility allows you to create a personalized experience beyond the main highlights. Remember to wear comfortable shoes for walking and carry sunscreen as the afternoon sun can be strong.

Return Journey to Delhi

Around 5:00 PM, you will begin your comfortable drive back to Delhi, reflecting on the day’s unforgettable sights and stories. The return trip along the Yamuna Expressway offers a peaceful end to your adventure, with drop-off at your hotel in Delhi or NCR. This private overnight tour combines convenience, expert guidance, and cultural immersion, making it an ideal choice for travelers seeking a seamless and enriching Taj Mahal and Agra experience.

The overnight tour from Delhi was the perfect way to experience Agra without rushing. Our private car picked us up from our Delhi hotel and the drive took about 3.5 hours on the expressway. We visited the Taj Mahal in the afternoon, had dinner at a lovely local restaurant, then went back for the sunrise view the next morning. Seeing the Taj at two completley different times of day was magical. The hotel they arranged was clean and comfortable.

Really glad we chose the overnight option instead of trying to cram everything into one day. The private car from Delhi was comfortable with AC and bottled water. We saw the Taj Mahal at sunset which was gorgeous, the marble turns this warm golden colour. Next morning we visited Agra Fort before heading back. Only giving 4 stars because the hotel could have been a bit nicer for the price, but the tour itself was excellent.

This overnight Agra tour from Delhi exceeded our expectations. The driver was professional and the car was very clean. Arriving in the afternoon meant we could see the Taj without the massive morning crowds. Our guide arranged everything perfectly. The next morning we woke early and caught the sunrise colours on the white marble, it was absolutley breathtaking. Two days in Agra is definately better than one.

Perfect trip for anyone who doesnt want to rush through Agra in a single day. The private car from Delhi was spacious and our driver was very experienced on the Yamuna Expressway. We checked into the hotel, freshened up, then headed to the Taj Mahal for the afternoon light. Had a wonderful dinner at a rooftop restaurant with views of the Taj lit up at night. Morning visit to Agra Fort completed the experience. Highly recommend the overnight option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — one night's accommodation in a 4-star hotel in Agra is included in the tour package. Standard hotels include properties like the Courtyard by Marriott Agra, Crystal Sarovar Premiere, or equivalent rated hotels located 3–5 km from the Taj Mahal. The room includes breakfast, Wi-Fi, and air conditioning. Upgrades to 5-star luxury hotels (The Oberoi Amarvilas with direct Taj Mahal views, ITC Mughal, or Trident Agra) are available at an additional cost. Hotel assignment is confirmed at booking — you can request a specific property or category based on your preferences and budget.
Yes — this is the primary advantage of the overnight tour over a same-day trip. On Day 1, you visit the Taj Mahal in the late afternoon when the white marble turns golden-orange in the sunset light (entry until one hour before sunset). On Day 2, you return at sunrise (gates open at 6:00 AM) when the marble glows pink and gold in the early morning light with minimal crowds. Seeing the Taj Mahal in two completely different lighting conditions is an extraordinary experience that same-day visitors miss entirely. Between the two visits, you can also view the Taj from Mehtab Bagh at sunset.
The drive from Delhi to Agra takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours via the Yamuna Expressway (NH19), a modern 6-lane divided highway covering 200 km. Departure from your Delhi hotel is typically at 8:00–9:00 AM (later than same-day tours since you have two full days). The expressway is smooth, well-maintained, and largely traffic-free outside rush hours. Toll charges (approximately ₹415 each way) are included in the tour price. A comfort stop is made at a highway service plaza approximately 90 minutes into the journey. The return drive on Day 2 departs Agra after lunch.
A private air-conditioned vehicle is assigned exclusively to your group for the entire duration — both days and overnight. Vehicle types include: Toyota Innova Crysta (6-seat SUV, most popular for families and groups of 3–5), sedan (Toyota Etios or similar for couples/solo), or a tempo traveller (12-seat minibus for groups of 7+). The vehicle includes USB charging, bottled water, and tissue supplies. The same driver stays with you throughout, ensuring consistency and familiarity. All fuel, tolls, parking fees, and driver accommodation are included in the tour price.
Yes — a Ministry of Tourism-licensed guide accompanies you for all monument visits across both days. The guide provides comprehensive historical commentary at the Taj Mahal (both sunset and sunrise visits), Agra Fort, and any additional monuments on your itinerary. Having the same guide for two days allows for much deeper engagement with Mughal history — Day 1 covers the Taj Mahal's construction story and architecture, while Day 2 explores the broader political narrative at Agra Fort. The guide is available in English as standard, with other languages on request. See our Taj Mahal Official Guided Tour for guide details.
The tour includes breakfast at your Agra hotel on Day 2 and a sit-down lunch on both days at quality Agra restaurants. Dinner on Day 1 is at the hotel restaurant or a recommended local restaurant (cost included in the package). Restaurants serve North Indian, Mughlai, and continental cuisine with comprehensive vegetarian, vegan, Jain, and halal options. The lunch restaurants are selected for hygiene standards and proximity to the day's itinerary. Inform your guide of dietary requirements or allergies at booking so all restaurants can be briefed in advance.
Day 1: Depart Delhi hotel at 8:00–9:00 AM → drive to Agra (3–3.5 hours) → lunch in Agra → Agra Fort guided tour (1.5–2 hours) → Taj Mahal afternoon/sunset visit (2–2.5 hours) → optional Mehtab Bagh sunset viewpoint → hotel check-in → dinner. Day 2: Early morning sunrise Taj Mahal visit (2 hours) → return to hotel for breakfast → checkout → optional visit to Itmad-ud-Daula (Baby Taj) or local bazaars → lunch → depart Agra at 1:00–2:00 PM → arrive Delhi by 4:30–5:30 PM. The itinerary is flexible and can be customised to your interests.
Beyond the Taj Mahal (visited twice — sunset and sunrise), the standard overnight itinerary includes: Agra Fort — the massive 94-acre UNESCO World Heritage Mughal fortress where Shah Jahan was imprisoned with a view of the Taj; Itmad-ud-Daula (Baby Taj) — the exquisite marble tomb often called the 'jewel box' and the first Mughal structure to use Pietra Dura marble inlay; and Mehtab Bagh — the Mughal garden directly across the Yamuna from the Taj Mahal offering the perfect rear-view reflection photograph. Optional additions include Fatehpur Sikri (37 km away) or the Hidden Gems of Agra Heritage Tour.
The overnight tour is superior for four key reasons: (1) You see the Taj Mahal in two lighting conditions — sunset golden light and sunrise pink-gold glow — which same-day visitors cannot do; (2) The sunrise visit (Day 2) has the smallest crowds and best photography conditions of the entire day; (3) You have time for additional monuments (Agra Fort, Baby Taj, Mehtab Bagh) without rushing; and (4) The pace is relaxed rather than the 14-hour marathon of a same-day trip. The overnight format is especially recommended for photographers, honeymooners, and anyone who considers the Taj Mahal a once-in-a-lifetime experience worth experiencing properly.
The best season is October through March when temperatures are comfortable (10–25 degrees Celsius), skies are generally clear, and the Yamuna Expressway drive is pleasant. November and February offer the ideal balance of mild weather and clear visibility. December–January can have morning fog that occasionally obscures sunrise views but creates ethereal, atmospheric photographs. April–June is extremely hot (40–47 degrees Celsius) — the overnight format is still viable since you visit monuments in early morning and late afternoon, avoiding peak heat. The monsoon season (July–September) brings dramatic clouds that create stunning Taj Mahal backdrops but occasional rain. See our Agra Travel Guide for seasonal details.
Yes — both extensions are popular and highly recommended. Fatehpur Sikri (37 km from Agra, 45 minutes) adds approximately 2 hours and is best visited on Day 2 morning before the return drive to Delhi. It is Emperor Akbar's magnificent abandoned capital city with the Buland Darwaza — the tallest gateway in the world at 54 metres. Mathura and Vrindavan (55 km from Agra, 1 hour) add approximately 3–4 hours and can be visited on Day 2 en route back to Delhi. Adding either extension converts the return to Delhi to a late-afternoon arrival instead of early afternoon. Both sites have separate entry fees (included if added to the package).
Yes, the Taj Mahal is closed every Friday for religious reasons. Please ensure your tour date for the Taj Mahal does not fall on a Friday.
Yes, foreign tourists must show their original passport or a high-quality digital photo at the entrance gates for security identification and monument entry.
Sunrise is the best time to visit the Taj Mahal. The gates open at 6:00 AM and the soft morning light creates the most stunning views. Arrive by 5:30 AM to beat the crowds and get the best photography conditions.
Yes, Delhi is generally safe for tourists, especially in popular tourist areas like Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk, and around major monuments. Booking a licensed local guide through AsiaByLocals adds an extra layer of safety and local knowledge.
The Delhi Metro is the fastest and most affordable way to travel between attractions. For tour experiences, our guides arrange private air-conditioned vehicles so you can cover Old Delhi and New Delhi comfortably in one day.
For popular sites like Qutub Minar, Humayun's Tomb, and Red Fort, advance tickets are recommended to skip long queues. When you book a guided tour through AsiaByLocals, entry tickets and skip-the-line access are typically included.
