Private Surf Lesson at Kata Beach – Detailed Itinerary

Experience the excitement of surfing in Phuket with a private surf lesson at Kata Beach, one of the most popular and beginner-friendly surfing locations in Thailand. This lesson is designed for travelers who want to learn how to surf in a fun, safe, and supportive environment while enjoying the beautiful coastline of Phuket.

Your surfing experience begins when you arrive at the meeting point at SSS Phuket Dive, Freedive & Surf, located near Kata Beach. Here you will meet your professional surf instructor who will guide you throughout the entire session. After a short introduction, the instructor will provide you with the necessary equipment including a surfboard and rashguard. The instructor will also help you choose the correct surfboard size based on your height, weight, and experience level to ensure the best possible learning experience.

Before entering the water, the lesson starts with a short beach briefing lasting approximately 10–15 minutes. During this session your instructor will teach you the basic techniques of surfing. You will learn how to properly position yourself on the surfboard, how to paddle effectively, how to maintain balance, and how to safely stand up when riding a wave. The instructor will also explain ocean safety, wave timing, and how to enter and exit the water safely.

Once the basics are covered, it is time to head into the water. Kata Beach is well known for its gentle waves and sandy bottom, making it one of the best surfing spots in Phuket for beginners. With your instructor by your side, you will begin practicing in the shallow water where the waves are smaller and easier to manage.

During this part of the lesson, the instructor will help you catch your first waves. In the beginning, the instructor may give you a gentle push to help you get started and guide you into the right position on the surfboard. As you become more comfortable, you will begin paddling and catching waves on your own. Many beginners are able to stand on their surfboard during their first surf lesson, making it an exciting and rewarding experience.

Throughout the session your instructor will continue to provide tips and feedback to help improve your technique. You will practice balancing, paddling, and riding waves while gaining confidence in the water. Because this is a private surf lesson, the instructor can focus entirely on your progress and adjust the training according to your skill level.

The lesson usually lasts around two hours, giving you plenty of time to practice and enjoy surfing at Kata Beach. Between waves you will have time to rest, ask questions, and receive additional coaching from your instructor.

To make your experience even more memorable, photos and videos of your surf lesson are included. These allow you to capture the moment you ride your first wave and share your surfing adventure with friends and family.

By the end of the lesson, most participants leave with a solid understanding of the basics of surfing and the confidence to continue practicing on their own. Whether you are trying surfing for the first time or simply looking for a fun activity during your trip to Phuket, this private surf lesson at Kata Beach offers an unforgettable introduction to surfing in Thailand.

With professional instruction, high-quality equipment, and the stunning scenery of Kata Beach, this experience is the perfect way to enjoy the waves and create lasting memories during your Phuket holiday.

Always wanted to learn to surf and Kata Beach was the perfect place for it. The waves here are gentle and consistent which makes it ideal for beginners. My instructor was super patient and started with beach technique before we even got in the water. By the end of the 2 hour lesson I was standing up and riding small waves on my own! Having a private lesson meant all the attention was on me instead of sharing with 10 other students. The instructor also took photos of me surfing which was a nice bonus.

Booked private lessons for me and my boyfriend who had never surfed before. The instructor was amazing, very encouraging and adjusted his teaching style for each of us individually. Kata Beach has soft sand and the waves during February were perfect for learning, not too big not too flat. My boyfriend was standing up by the end of lesson one! The equipment provided was good quality and included rash guards and reef shoes. Would definately recommend this over group lessons.

Really enjoyed this. I've surfed a few times before but never had proper technique so this was great for fixing my bad habits. The instructor filmed me on his phone and showed me what I was doing wrong which was really helpful. Kata Beach is a beautiful spot for surfing, warm water, sandy bottom, no scary rocks or reefs to worry about. Only thing is the lesson is quite tiring in the heat so bring plenty of water and sunscreen.

I was nervous about trying surfing but the private lesson format made me feel very safe. The instructor spent the first 20 minutes on the beach showing me the technique and only went into the water when I was ready. He stayed right next to me the whole time and pushed me into waves at exactly the right moment. I actually stood up on my third try! The feeling of riding a wave is incredible. Kata Beach is the perfect spot, warm clear water and gentle waves.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best surfing season at Kata Beach is during the southwest monsoon from May to October, when consistent swells bring rideable waves of 1–3 feet ideal for beginners and intermediates. June to September typically offers the most reliable surf conditions. During the dry season (November–April), Kata Beach is generally flat with minimal wave activity, making it unsuitable for surfing. The private surf lesson at Kata Beach operates during the monsoon season when conditions are optimal. Check our Phuket travel guide 2026 for month-by-month seasonal details.
Yes — Kata Beach is widely regarded as Phuket's best beginner surf spot. The waves during monsoon season are typically gentle 1–3 foot swells that break over a sandy bottom (no sharp reef or rocks in the main surf zone). The beach has a gradual slope, allowing beginners to stand in waist-deep water while practising pop-ups and catching whitewater waves. The private surf lesson at Kata Beach takes advantage of these forgiving conditions — your instructor selects the safest section of the beach based on that day's current and swell direction. Kata is to Phuket what Waikiki is to Hawaii: the perfect learner's wave.
The private surf lesson at Kata Beach runs for approximately 1.5–2 hours. This includes a 20–30 minute land-based introduction covering board handling, paddling technique, pop-up mechanics, wave reading, and ocean safety, followed by 60–90 minutes of in-water instruction. The private format means the entire session focuses exclusively on you — the instructor stays within arm's reach in the water, pushes you into waves, and provides real-time feedback on your stance and balance. Most beginners successfully stand up and ride a wave within the first hour of instruction.
Yes — all equipment is fully provided for the private surf lesson at Kata Beach. This includes a soft-top foam surfboard (the safest type for beginners — no hard fins or sharp edges), a surf rash guard to protect against board rash and sunburn, and a leash. Soft-top boards are 8–9 feet long, providing maximum stability and buoyancy for learning. You do not need to bring any equipment — just wear swimwear, apply reef-safe sunscreen, and arrive ready to surf. The instructor selects the appropriate board size based on your height, weight, and experience level.
The private surf lesson at Kata Beach is suitable for participants aged 7 to 65+. No specific fitness level is required for beginners — if you can swim 25 metres unassisted and are comfortable in waist-to-chest-deep water, you can learn to surf. The instructor adapts the lesson to your physical ability. Children aged 7–12 must be accompanied by a parent on the beach (not necessarily in the water). Surfing is less physically demanding than people expect for beginners — most of the effort is paddling and standing, not fighting massive waves. The gentle Kata Beach conditions make this accessible to virtually everyone.
The private surf lesson provides 100% instructor attention — compared to group lessons where an instructor divides time among 4–8 students, you receive continuous one-on-one coaching. This translates to faster progression: the instructor catches waves with you, physically adjusts your stance, and provides immediate feedback on every ride. Private lessons also allow complete schedule flexibility — you choose the time that suits the best wave conditions rather than fitting into a fixed group schedule. Most private students stand up on their first session; in group lessons, some students never stand up at all due to insufficient individual attention.
The early morning (7:00–9:00 AM) and late afternoon (3:30–5:30 PM) are the best times for the private surf lesson at Kata Beach. Morning sessions benefit from calmer winds, fewer swimmers in the surf zone, and cooler temperatures. Late afternoon sessions often have the most consistent wave energy as afternoon sea breezes generate clean swell lines. Midday (11:00 AM–2:00 PM) is the least ideal — the tropical sun is intense, the beach is crowded, and onshore winds can chop up the waves. Your instructor will recommend the optimal time based on the day's specific surf forecast.
Bring: reef-safe mineral sunscreen (apply 30 minutes before the lesson and reapply after), swimwear, a towel, drinking water, and a waterproof camera if you want wave-riding footage. Provided: surfboard, rash guard, and leash. Optional: waterproof phone pouch (the instructor can take photos from the water), contact lenses instead of glasses (glasses cannot be worn while surfing), and a light snack for after the session. Leave behind: jewellery, watches, and sunglasses — anything loose will be lost in the surf. For other Kata Beach activities, the Thai cooking class in the Kata jungle pairs perfectly with a morning surf session.
Yes — most complete beginners stand up and ride a wave during their first private surf lesson at Kata Beach. The combination of Kata's gentle, forgiving waves, a stable foam surfboard, and one-on-one instruction creates ideal learning conditions. The instructor breaks surfing into manageable steps: first lying on the board, then practising the pop-up on the beach, then catching whitewater waves on your belly, and finally standing. Success rates for standing on the first lesson exceed 80% in private format. Even if standing takes longer for some, every student rides waves on their belly — which is enormously fun in itself.
Kata Beach is one of the safest surf spots in Thailand for beginners. The wave break zone has a sandy bottom with no reef, rocks, or coral hazards. During the monsoon surf season, red-and-yellow flags mark the lifeguard-patrolled swim zone, and your private surf instructor operates within sight of the lifeguard station. The soft-top foam board eliminates the risk of hard-board injuries common with fibreglass shortboards. The instructor maintains physical proximity throughout the lesson and is trained in ocean rescue and first aid. Rip current awareness is covered in the safety briefing — Kata's rips are generally weak and predictable during the surf season.
A private surf lesson at Kata Beach takes only 2 hours, leaving the rest of your day wide open. Popular combinations: morning surf + afternoon scuba diving at Racha Yai Island (different day recommended for ear pressure), morning surf + afternoon Thai cooking class in Kata (the jungle kitchen is just minutes from the beach), or surf + evening Muay Thai training class for the ultimate active Phuket day.
