Pickup from Jaipur

Your experience begins with a comfortable pickup from your preferred location in Jaipur, including your hotel, airport, railway station, or bus station. From there, you will travel to the elephant sanctuary located near the Amer area.

Arrival at the Elephant Sanctuary

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by the sanctuary staff and introduced to the elephants and their caretakers. You will learn about the sanctuary’s mission to provide a safe and caring environment for rescued elephants.

Meeting & Introduction with the Elephants

Start your experience by meeting the elephants and learning about their personalities, behavior, and communication methods. Guests are encouraged to interact gently, speak softly, and build a natural connection with the elephants while the guides explain their fascinating habits.

Feeding the Elephants

Enjoy the opportunity to feed the elephants with fruits such as bananas and sugarcane. During this activity, you will learn about their diet, daily feeding routine, and how these intelligent animals interact with humans.

Elephant Washing & Shower

In the late afternoon, you can help wash and scrub the elephants as part of their daily care routine. While guests cannot enter the lake with the elephants due to safety guidelines, you can still participate in the bathing process and enjoy the playful moments when elephants spray water with their trunks.

We specifically chose this tour because it was ethical and NOT riding elephants. So glad we did. The village is outside Jaipur and you get to feed the elephants, help bathe them, and learn about their care from the mahouts who have looked after them for generations. Our kids (7 and 10) were SO happy. The elephants were clearly well treated, healthy and calm. Best family experience in India.

Such a special experience. I was worried it might be exploitative but it was the complete opposite. The elephants roam freely in a large enclosure and the mahout families have been caring for them for decades. We fed them sugarcane and watermelon and they were so gentle. Got to do some painting on the elephant (with safe natural colors) which was unique. Guide was very informative about elephant welfare.

Nice experience at the elephant village. The drive from Jaipur takes about 40 minutes which is a bit far but worth it. The elephants are beautful and the interaction felt respectful. We helped with bathing which was hillarious, got completley soaked! Only minus is that the village itself is basic with limited facilities (no proper restroom). But the elephant time was wonderful.

I researched elephant experiences in Jaipur extensivly and chose this one because of the ethical approach. No riding, no chains, no hooks. The elephants come to you because they want to (mostly for the food haha). The mahout explained each elephants personality and history. One was rescued from a circus which made me tear up. Really well run operation. Please support places like this instead of riding elephants at Amber Fort.

Beautful morning with the elephants. We went early (8am pickup) and had almost 2 hours with the animals. Fed them, touched them, took photos with them. The guide translated what the mahout was telling us about each elephant which was facinating. The village is simple but charming. They also served us chai and snacks which was a nice touch. Very memorable experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Jaipur elephant village tour is an ethical visit to a rural community near Jaipur where elephants live in a working traditional environment — mahout (elephant handler) families who have raised and cared for elephants for generations. The experience is designed around respectful elephant interaction in their natural habitat: observing mahouts' daily routines with their elephants, walking alongside the elephants (led by their mahouts) through the rural landscape surrounding the village, feeding them (sugarcane, bananas, seasonal fruits), and learning about the traditional knowledge system that governs the mahout-elephant relationship. This is explicitly not an elephant riding experience — it is a conservation and cultural education visit that benefits both the elephants and the host community.
No — elephant riding is not offered or endorsed on this tour. Elephant riding at tourist attractions involves training practices (the 'phajaan' breaking method) that cause lasting psychological and physical harm to elephants. Asia by Locals specifically partners with elephant sanctuaries and villages that have transitioned away from riding and towards welfare-focused tourism. The interactions offered on this tour (walking alongside, feeding, bathing observation) are activities that elephants engage in willingly without coercion — the quality of interaction from an observational and emotional perspective is actually far richer than a brief mechanical ride would be.
The village tour unfolds over approximately 2.5–3 hours: Arrival — meet your mahout guide and their elephant; brief introduction to the elephant's history and personality. Morning walk — accompany the elephant on their daily walk through the fields and tree-groves surrounding the village (30–40 minutes). Feeding session — provide sugarcane, pumpkin, and bananas directly to the elephant (10–15 minutes; these giants consume 150–200 kg of food daily). Bath preparation — watch the elephant receive a scrub-down at the village's bathing area if your visit coincides with bath time. Mahout conversation — through an interpreter, ask the mahout about the multi-generational relationship between their family and their elephant, the traditional knowledge systems used in elephant care, and the conservation challenges they face.
The elephant village is located approximately 15–20 km from Jaipur city centre — a 30–40 minute drive in a private vehicle. The village is in the rural landscape surrounding Amber Fort and the Aravalli hills, in an area that is visually very different from the urban Pink City. Many visitors combine the elephant village tour with the Amber Fort visit (also in the Amber area, 15 km from Jaipur) for an efficient combined morning: Amber Fort (8:30–11:00 AM), elephant village (11:00 AM–1:30 PM), return to Jaipur for lunch. The vehicle transits between all locations.
Yes — the elephant village tour is an extraordinary experience for children and is one of the most popular family activities near Jaipur. Children aged 5 and above can participate fully in feeding and walking alongside the elephants under the close supervision of the mahout and guide. Close elephant interaction creates profound childhood memories and — when framed properly by the guide's ethical context — teaches children important lessons about wildlife conservation and the traditional human-animal relationships that exist in Asia. For very young children (under 5), the elephants' size can be initially overwhelming — the mahout introduces the elephant slowly and gradually for young visitors.
Wear comfortable clothes you don't mind getting dirty or splashed — elephants may spray water, and the village environment involves dust and animal smells. Closed-toe shoes or sturdy sandals are preferable to open-toe footwear near elephants. Avoid wearing very bright or patterned clothing, as sudden visual stimuli can startle elephants — muted, natural colours are recommended. Long trousers are practical for the rural walk through grass and vegetation. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and insect repellent — the village and walking route are partially in direct sun. Don't bring food (other than what the guide provides for elephant feeding) as elephants can smell food and become interested in your bag.
A mahout is a professional elephant handler and caretaker — a role that in India has been traditionally passed from father to son across generations. Mahout families typically bond with a single elephant from a very young age, developing an intimate lifelong relationship. This human-elephant bond is the foundation of the elephant village experience. Traditional mahouts possess extensive empirical knowledge about elephant behavior, health, diet, and psychology accumulated across generations. As elephant-based working traditions (logging, temple ceremonies, royal processions) have declined, many mahout families have transitioned to tourism-based income as a means of maintaining their elephant relationships. Ethical elephant tourism directly supports these families' ability to continue caring for their elephants.
Yes — the elephant village and Amber Fort are in the same geographic area (Amber, 15 km from Jaipur) and are frequently combined in a single morning. Recommended sequence: Amber Fort first (8:30–10:30 AM, morning light on the red sandstone facade), then elephant village (11:00 AM–1:30 PM), then return to Jaipur for lunch and the afternoon city circuit (City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, Nahargarh Fort sunset). This combination makes for an exceptionally complete Jaipur day — the grand royal fortress, the traditional mahout culture, and the planned Pink City heritage all in a single itinerary.
This tour is specifically designed around responsible and ethical principles: (1) No elephant riding or forced performances; (2) The village and families we partner with are verified to not use cruel training methods (the 'phajaan' or breaking process); (3) Tour income goes directly to the mahout families and is a primary livelihood source; (4) Visitor interaction protocols are designed to minimize stress for the elephants; (5) The guide educates visitors about the conservation situation of Asian elephants (classified as Endangered, with only approximately 40,000–50,000 remaining in the wild). We periodically review our partner villages to ensure welfare standards are maintained.
Photographing elephants at close range is an extraordinary experience — here are tips for the best results. Camera settings: use a fast shutter speed (1/500s or faster) as elephants move their trunks, ears, and bodies constantly; a slow shutter produces motion blur. Focal length: a 35–85mm lens is ideal for the close-range village interactions — telephoto lenses (200mm+) are unnecessary as you are within metres of the elephants. Eye-level perspective: crouch or kneel to capture elephants at eye level rather than shooting down from standing height — this creates dramatically more engaging images and conveys the elephant's personality. Golden hour: the early morning light (8:00–9:30 AM) at the village creates warm, soft illumination on the elephants' textured skin and is the most flattering photography light. Feeding moments: the most expressive photographs come during the feeding session — elephants reaching their trunk towards you for sugarcane creates a powerful compositional dynamic. Flash: never use flash near elephants as it can startle them. Smartphone users: portrait mode works exceptionally well for elephant close-ups, creating a natural bokeh effect. The mahouts are accustomed to photography and will position the elephant for optimal angles if asked politely. For combining this experience with Jaipur's iconic monument photography, see our Amber Fort official guided tour.
Amber Fort is located 11 km from Jaipur city center, about a 20-minute drive. When you book a guided tour through AsiaByLocals, round-trip transportation from your hotel is included. You can also take an elephant or jeep ride up to the fort entrance.
Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is recommended for temple visits. Comfortable walking shoes are essential as forts like Amber Fort and Nahargarh Fort involve significant walking on stone pathways. Carry sunscreen and water, especially during summer months.
Yes, all three can be covered in a full-day guided tour. Our Jaipur city tours are designed to cover these major attractions efficiently with an experienced local guide who knows the best routes and timing to avoid crowds.
