Vollständige Beschreibung

Ein Marmortempel und ein Kuhschutzhof, die besser zusammengehören, als es klingt.

Der Birla Mandir liegt unterhalb des Moti-Dungri-Hügels und ist vollständig aus weißem Makrana-Marmor gebaut, aus demselben Steinbruch wie der Taj Mahal. Er wurde 1988 von der Industriellenfamilie Birla fertiggestellt, ist also nicht alt und gibt sich auch nicht so. Zwei Stunden wert machen ihn die Steinmetzarbeit und eine ungewöhnliche Offenheit: neben den hinduistischen Figuren zeigen die Glasfenster und Reliefs auch Christus, Buddha, Zarathustra, Konfuzius und Sokrates, was eine bewusste Aussage ist und keine Dekoration.

Nachts wird er von innen beleuchtet und der Marmor glüht, und dann kommt ein großer Teil Jaipurs.

Die Gaushala

Eine Gaushala ist ein Schutzhof für Kühe, die alt, verletzt oder ausgesetzt sind oder sonst auf der Straße stünden. Sie werden aus Spenden finanziert und weitgehend von Freiwilligen betrieben, und sie sind in ganz Indien Teil des religiösen Alltags, den Besucher fast nie sehen.

Nach dem Tempel dorthin zu gehen verbindet zwei Hälften derselben Idee: den Ausdruck in Marmor, und die tägliche Praxis. Sie können die Kühe füttern, was als verdienstvolle Handlung gilt und außerdem einfach angenehm ist.
