Pflege statt Ritte

Dieser Besuch dreht sich darum, wie Elefanten versorgt werden, nicht darum, auf einem zu sitzen. Hier wird nicht geritten.

Was Sie stattdessen tun, ist drei Stunden mit den Tieren und den Menschen zu verbringen, die täglich mit ihnen arbeiten, was sich als weit interessanter herausstellt als ein Foto von einem Howdah aus.

Hathi Gaon

Das Elefantendorf wurde in den 2000er Jahren außerhalb Jaipurs erbaut, speziell damit die Tiere und ihre Mahouts Bäume, Wasser und Platz statt einer Stadtgasse hätten. Etwa hundert Elefanten leben dort mit den Familien ihrer Pfleger.

Was Sie lernen

Der Tagesablauf, der größtenteils aus Essen besteht: ein erwachsener Elefant verarbeitet etwa 150 kg Vegetation pro Tag und trinkt bis zu 200 Liter Wasser. Einen zu füttern ist langsamer und seltsamer, als man erwartet.

Verhalten und Kommunikation, Elefanten nutzen Infraschall unterhalb der menschlichen Hörschwelle, so bleiben getrennte Tiere über Kilometer in Kontakt. Der Rüssel hat etwa vierzigtausend Muskeln und keinen Knochen.

Fuß- und Hautpflege, die eigentliche Arbeit. Elefantenfüße tragen vier Tonnen und werden leicht zum Problem; Nägel und Ballen werden ständig kontrolliert und gefeilt. Die Haut ist zweieinhalb Zentimeter dick und bekommt trotzdem Sonnenbrand, deshalb werfen sie sich Staub und Schlamm über.

Die Mahouts

Die meisten haben jahrelang mit demselben Tier gearbeitet, oft aus einer Familie, die das seit Generationen tut. Sie sind die interessantesten Menschen auf dem Gelände und beantworten alles, wie sie eine Stimmung lesen, woher ein Tier kam, wie lange Vertrauen gedauert hat.

Drei Stunden. Sie könnten nass oder schlammig werden, je nachdem, was die Tiere tun, bringen Sie Wechselkleidung mit.

Our guide Kishur was very knowledgeable and pleasant. He accommodated to our needs. He made the day very enjoyable and told us a lot about the culture and history of Jaipur. The driver Arif was very nice and friendly. His driving was excellent. We highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to be more flexible with the itinerary.

Great tour with Irfan and Rama Singh today, we explored Jaipur high and low starting with the Amer Fort and ending with the monkey palace. It’s great to be able to customise to what you want to see and Ifran offered many more points of interest that were more local and less touristy. We thoroughly enjoyed- thank you!

The tour was very well organized, Harshit was a great tour guide and gave his best to explain everything and answer our questions. He also accomodated our request to stop for a visit that was not planned at the beginning. We felt very safe in general going around with him and the driver.
