Lack, und warum Jaipur der Ort ist, wo er hergestellt wird

Lack ist ein Harz, das von einem Insekt auf Wirtsbäumen abgesondert wird, abgeschabt, raffiniert und eingefärbt. Rajasthan verarbeitet ihn seit Jahrhunderten, und die Armreif-Gassen bei Tripolia Bazaar in Jaipur, Maniharon ka Rasta, wörtlich die Straße der Armreif-Macher, sind das Zentrum davon.

Das Handwerk läuft in Familien, und es gibt jedes Jahrzehnt weniger davon. Ein Workshop ist, wie sie neben den Geschäften überleben.

Wie ein Lack-Armreif hergestellt wird

Der Kunsthandwerker erweicht einen Stab Lack über einer kleinen offenen Flamme, bis er formbar ist, wie warmes Toffee.
