Leoparden, zwanzig Minuten vom City Palace entfernt

Jhalana ist ein 23 Quadratkilometer großes Stück trockenen Waldes innerhalb der Stadtgrenzen Jaipurs, und beherbergt eine der dichtesten Leopardenpopulationen in ganz Indien, etwa dreißig bis vierzig Tiere auf dieser kleinen Fläche. Amagarh, erst kürzlich auf der anderen Seite der Stadt eröffnet, ist das zweite Reservat.

Das ist wirklich ungewöhnlich. Die meisten Großkatzen brauchen Platz und vermeiden Menschen; diese hier leben neben einer Stadt mit vier Millionen Menschen.

Die Safari

Ein offener 4x4 auf Waldpfaden mit einem Naturforscher und einem Guide der Forstbehörde. Zwei Slots pro Tag, morgens und nachmittags, und welches Reservat Sie bekommen, wird bei der Buchung bestätigt statt gewählt.

Sichtungen liegen in den guten Monaten bei etwa 60 bis 70 Prozent, was für einen wilden Leoparden irgendwo hoch ist. Sie werden nicht gefüttert oder angelockt, die Dichte ist einfach so hoch, und die Tiere sind an Fahrzeuge gewöhnt.

Was sonst noch dort ist

Streifenhyäne, Schakal, Wüstenfuchs, Nilgauantilope, Chital, Indischer Hase und Stachelschwein. Die Vogelbeobachtung ist stark: Indische Pitta während des Monsuns, Paradiesschnäpper, Eulen, und Greifvögel über dem Grat.

Die Ruinen eines Stufenbrunnens und ein kleiner Tempel liegen im Wald, und der Aravalli-Grat bietet Ihnen die Skyline der Stadt aus einem unerwarteten Winkel.
