Dos lugares a los que casi nadie llega

Chand Baori en Abhaneri

Es el pozo escalonado más profundo y geométricamente más escandaloso de la India: 3.500 escalones en tramos dobles perfectos que bajan trece plantas hasta un cuadrado de agua verde al fondo. Lo excavó en el siglo IX el rey Chanda, para una aldea que necesitaba agua durante un verano de desierto.

La temperatura al fondo va cinco o seis grados por debajo de la superficie, y esa era la idea: un lugar para sacar agua y también para dejar pasar el calor. Las escaleras forman un patrón que se fotografía como una ilusión óptica, y lo ha visto en películas sin saber dónde estaba.

No se puede bajar hasta el agua. La galería superior y el templo de Harshat Mata al lado están abiertos.

Fuerte de Bhangarh

Una ciudad completa del siglo XVII, palacio, calle de mercado, templos, havelis, murallas, abandonada y dejada en pie al pie de los Aravalli.

Es famosa en la India como el lugar más encantado del país, y el Archaeological Survey tiene allí un cartel que prohíbe entrar entre el atardecer y el amanecer, el único cartel así en un monumento de la ASI. Las leyendas hablan de un hechicero y una princesa; la historia más probable es hambruna, una ruta comercial desplazada y un manantial seco.

Lo que obtiene en realidad es una ciudad desierta entera que puede recorrer a pie con casi nadie dentro: la calle del mercado con sombra de banianos, los zócalos de los templos, el palacio al fondo contra la colina. Vaya por eso y no por los fantasmas.

Práctico

Unos 90 km en cada sentido, unas ocho horas de puerta a puerta. Bhangarh implica caminar de verdad sobre piedra irregular y hay poca sombra en las ruinas. Lleve agua; los puestos de la entrada son limitados.
