Pushkar es una ciudad de templos alrededor de un lago del que se dice que no tiene fondo.

A unas tres horas de Jaipur, Pushkar está construida alrededor de un lago que los hindúes sostienen que se formó donde cayó un loto de la mano de Brahma. Es una de las ciudades habitadas de forma continua más antiguas de la India y uno de los muy pocos lugares con un templo dedicado a Brahma mismo, el Jagatpita Brahma Mandir, del siglo catorce, y la razón por la que vienen casi todos los peregrinos.

Cincuenta y dos ghats rodean el lago y los peregrinos se bañan en ellos a lo largo del día. La ciudad de alrededor es por vieja costumbre completamente vegetariana y sin alcohol, lo que le da un aire marcadamente distinto de cualquier otro lugar de Rajastán.

El safari en camello

El desierto empieza en el borde de la ciudad. El safari se adentra en las dunas, normalmente calculado para el final de la tarde, cuando el calor ha caído y la luz merece la pena. Los camellos son lentos, altos y se balancean bastante; es más cómodo de lo que parece los primeros veinte minutos y menos después de una hora.

Conviene saber

Los zapatos salen en los ghats y en el templo, y la fotografía en los ghats está restringida. Su guía le dirá dónde.
Cuidado con la estafa del "pasaporte de Pushkar": alguien se le acerca en un ghat ofreciendo una bendición, le ata un hilo en la muñeca y después exige un donativo grande. Rechace con educación antes de que le pongan el hilo.
El alcohol, la carne y los huevos no se venden en la ciudad. Eso se cumple de verdad.
La feria del camello de Pushkar dura una semana aproximadamente en octubre o noviembre. Extraordinaria y extremadamente llena: si viaja en esas fechas, pregúntenos antes de reservar.
