Un templo de mármol y un refugio de vacas, que van juntos más de lo que parece.

El Birla Mandir está al pie de la colina de Moti Dungri y está construido por completo en mármol blanco de Makrana, la misma cantera de la que salió el Taj Mahal. Lo terminó en 1988 la familia industrial Birla, así que no es antiguo y no finge serlo. Lo que le hace merecer dos horas es la talla y una apertura poco común: junto a las figuras hindúes, las vidrieras y los paneles incluyen a Cristo, Buda, Zoroastro, Confucio y Sócrates, lo que es una declaración deliberada y no decoración.

De noche se ilumina desde dentro y el mármol brilla, y es entonces cuando acude buena parte de Jaipur.

La gaushala

Una gaushala es un refugio para vacas viejas, heridas, abandonadas o que de otro modo estarían en la carretera. Se financian con donativos y funcionan en buena medida con voluntarios, y son una parte de la vida religiosa diaria en toda la India que los visitantes casi nunca ven.

Ir a una después del templo une las dos mitades de la misma idea: su expresión en mármol, y la práctica diaria. Puede dar de comer a las vacas, que se considera un acto meritorio y además resulta sencillamente agradable.
