El City Palace y el Hawa Mahal están a unos minutos a pie uno del otro dentro de la ciudad amurallada, lo que los convierte en la pareja natural para una mañana sin coche.

City Palace

La familia real sigue viviendo en una parte. Lo que está abierto es sustancial: el Mubarak Mahal con sus textiles y su vestuario, el Diwan-i-Khas que guarda las dos urnas de plata de ley que siguen siendo las mayores piezas de plata de una sola pieza jamás fabricadas, y el Pritam Niwas Chowk con cuatro puertas pintadas para las cuatro estaciones. La puerta del pavo real es la que fotografía todo el mundo y se lo merece.

Hawa Mahal

Construido en 1799 por Sawai Pratap Singh, cinco plantas de arenisca rosa con 953 ventanas pequeñas. El propósito era estricto: las mujeres de la casa real guardaban purdah y no podían ser vistas en la calle, así que la fachada les permitía ver las procesiones sin ser vistas. La celosía además canaliza el aire por el edificio, de donde viene el nombre.

Casi todos los visitantes hacen una foto desde la calle de enfrente. Entrar, por el acceso de la parte de atrás, que no es evidente, le da la vista a través de las ventanas y una idea mucho más clara de para qué servía.

La entrada del Hawa Mahal está por detrás, no por la fachada famosa. Hay gente que pasa diez minutos fuera buscando una puerta.
No hay transporte en esta visita: los dos sitios son céntricos y se llega a pie desde casi todos los hoteles de la ciudad vieja.
La mejor foto del Hawa Mahal se hace desde la cafetería de la azotea de enfrente, y merece la taza de chai.
Cuatro horas son cómodas para los dos con tiempo para sentarse.
