Una artesanía que genuinamente está desapareciendo

El kathputli es la tradición de marionetas de hilos de Rajastán, y tiene unos mil años de antigüedad. Los titiriteros eran comunidades bhat itinerantes que viajaban entre pueblos representando epopeyas y sátiras, llevando todo el teatro a la espalda.

La televisión se llevó la mayor parte de ese público. Hoy hay muchas menos familias que lo hacen que hace una generación, y las que quedan sobreviven en gran parte gracias a talleres como este.

Haciendo una

El artesano empieza con la historia, y luego construyes una marioneta.

La cabeza es de madera de mango, tallada y pintada. Las facciones se exageran a propósito, las marionetas kathputli están pensadas para leerse a distancia con poca luz, así que los ojos y los bigotes son enormes.

El cuerpo es tela rellena de algodón, vestido con retales de tela con espejos y recortes de lehenga, por eso cada marioneta es diferente. El disfraz te indica quién es el personaje: un noble rajput, una bailarina, un encantador de serpientes, un jinete.

Luego los hilos. Las marionetas kathputli famosamente no tienen piernas ni articulaciones visibles bajo la cintura, la figura se maneja con dos hilos atados a los dedos del titiritero, y el movimiento viene de toda la mano del titiritero. Es más difícil de lo que parece y el artesano te dejará fallar antes de mostrarte el truco.

El espectáculo

Después, una actuación. La historia clásica es Amar Singh Rathore, un noble de Jodhpur que luchó contra una corte mogola y perdió, contada con la narración cantada y el silbato de bambú estridente que la tradición usa en lugar de diálogo.

Las marionetas luchan, bailan, montan a caballo y se decapitan entre ellas. Los niños lo encuentran hilarante; los adultos notan la sátira política.
